Why do you choose to live on Long Island?
I'm just curious..... So many people talk about the negatives of Long Island housing, and there is no denying that the troubles exist. Yet people continue to buy and rent and live here. What is it that keeps people here?
I'll start. My family is here My teacher's salary is higher here than it might be in other parts of the country I like the seasons Close to the beach Close to the city

Re: Why do you choose to live on Long Island?
I love long island. Houses may be priced higher here but i think you get more for your money in terms of the location than you do in other areas. I am not saying other places don't have these, but we do have a lot of great things:
Beaches Proximity to NYC Proximity to snow skiing in the winter Great Schools Job Opportunity Shopping Access to major international airports Four Seasons
For me personally, my family is here as well which plays a big role. However, people are always complaining about the high cost of housing - Prices are high because what you are lacking in your own home, you make up for with a lot of other factors. You always hear people say "Location, Location, Location". If it were just the house that mattered, that saying wouldnt exist. Location is key and there is a lot to offer here.... I feel like, if having a big house is more important to you than living in this area, then by all means, move. That would make housing in this area more affordable for the people who do like it here and want to stay.... I'm sorry if i am ranting - I just hate when people complain about LI all the time! I wish that all of those people would move out of state so the people who truely appreciate it could afford it!

Re: Why do you choose to live on Long Island?
DH and I both have good jobs that we don’t have to travel into the city for. DH has moved around quite a bit and really doesn’t want to move again (huge PIA). So we are house hunting here.
My parents live here and a few friends too. That’s about it.
I love the water, the shopping, the food…
Just really depressed about the $ it costs for a sub standard house here

Family.
If it was up to DH we would have been long gone, but i grew up with all of my aunts uncles cousins anad grandparents within 5 minutes of me. I couldn't bring myself to start a family without having my child grow up having the same.

Re: Why do you choose to live on Long Island?
I was born here- so I really didn't choose to live here
the reasons why I am still here now-
friends and Job
once we work out the logistics of the job thing for Jake - then it will be only a matter of time before we are gone
I love the beach- but they have nicer ones where we are moving
I like the seasons- spring and fall- not winter- but I will get over it
my whole family is gone- so nothing but $$$$ is holding us back
reading the mediam income for Palm Beach Co this weekend freaked me out beyond belief

Couldn't have said it better myself.
My sister and niece were up visiting from GA this past week and we drove out to my SIL's cabana in Atlantic Beach one afternoon...just driving on the Loop Pkwy felt like we were in a different state. And the beach - gorgeous! That ride basically summed up why I love LI so much.

I agree 100%. I hear so many people complain and say they can't wait to move and I just want to say... "Then MOVE already... holy @#$% stop talking about it and do something... just move already" I think some people like to just talk and complain, they don't like to actually do anything.
For me it's...
salaries proximity to airports for DH's job seasons family NYC access to cultural attractions beaches shopping, access to almost anything food.

Family is #1!
Culture, etc. Any time we visit other areas we're sooo ready to go home...back to NY! We are NYers through and through…without getting myself into too much trouble I just keep it at that.
(NYC, Oceans, Yankees Stadium...you name it!)
DH & I would love to be homeowners, but it's not happening any time soon (within next couple of years)...so be it. If we have to rent forever...we'll rent. At least we'll be HOME!

I agree...go and find what you're looking for. I hear a lot of people just complaining about something to do with LI or New york and if you're not happy then make your decision and go.
Folks-life is too short to be miserable.

Re: Why do you choose to live on Long Island?
i didnt choose to live here -i was born here. All of my family is here (with the exception of my sister, but we arent that close).
If my family wanted to move, id be out of here in a heartbeat. I love to live here, but i dont think its worth how expensive it's become.
FH is a teacher and makes more $$ here than he would anywhere else, but I would probably make the same or even more elsewhere.

Re: Why do you choose to live on Long Island?
I'm not miserable living here- me and my Dh have great jobs and a great apartment
I would be fine to stay here forever- but my whole family packed up and left
which was easy for them to do- but not as easy for us
I don't want to give up my career - but I would like to find a nice house that the people weren't smokin crack when they thought of the asking price

I agree with you 100%. Yes - the price of houses are frustrating at times - but all of the complaining is not going to change it. If people have issues with paying these prices for Long Island - them move elsewhere. Bottom line.
The reasons I am here - my family, my friends, my life is here on Long Island. I can't imagine living anywhere else really.
While it would have been great to grow up in a place where the houses were cheaper and bigger - I would have never been paid what I was making in the city.

Did it ever occur to those of you who hate complainers that they complain because they WANT to stay but can’t afford to buy? ?

I feel very very sorry for people who want to stay and simply can not afford to. However, I think that a lot of the complaining that i see is not that a person can't afford anything, its that they dont want to live in what they can afford. People that make average incomes aren't going to be able to afford the types of homes that people can get on an average salary in some other parts of the country - but thats because we live in an above average location..... I don't know if i am getting my point across correctly, but its the same way people that make average salaries in NYC are forced to live in a studio apartment. But they do it because of the location, not because it is a big beautiful apartment overlooking central park like they might be able to afford in say, Oklahoma.....

Yes, I completely understand that and I am not saying that the prices of houses on Long Island are fair at all. I think it sux that most people need two salaries to afford their house.
But on the flip side - there's a reason why we pay so much more than let's say Idaho (just picking a random place) -- we live minutes away from so many wonderful things. NYC -- where you can not only get a job and make a TON of money -- but there are fabulous restaurants, great museums, broadway plays, etc -- minutes from the beaches...there is just so much to LI. I think that real estate on Long Island is always going to be something where you will make a profit in the long run.
I also think there are ways to get around affording houses on Long Island....we have tenants...and though we don't need them to pay the mortgage - it is so nice to have the extra income since we do shell out so much money every month.

Re: Why do you choose to live on Long Island?
How many of you guys that are saying that some people are "complaining" are first time buyers? I think it would be alot easier for me to stop complaining if I made a ton of $$ on a condo before buying my first house.
and FH and I make over the average income for LI and can't afford the average home price. If I could afford the average home price, I wouldnt complain!
Just curious....

I was a first time homeowner - and I am being dead honest when I say that I was ONLY able to buy my house because my last job paid me soooooo much money that I worked my a$$ off for three years and banked every penny. DH wasn't much of a saver back in the day.
That could also be why I really appreciate owning a home because I know that I busted my butt to get it.
I understand the complaining - I STILL complain about how much I paid for my house....but I do think at some point people just need to stop complaining and look at the big picture - if they want to live in Long Island - this is the price they will have to pay - and try to make it work. All of the complaining in the world isn't going to make the prices drop.
