Lower back tatoo vs epidural
One of the teacher mentioned this at my daycare & I can't imagine this is true...
If you have a tatoo on your lower back - you can't have an epidural?

Re: Lower back tatoo vs epidural
Not true at all. I have a butterfly tattoo on my lower back and there weren't any problems whatsoever with me getting the epidural.

Thanks I thought it sounded ridiculous - I didn't/don't have either but said I'd try to find out for her.

Re: Lower back tatoo vs epidural
That is strange why wouldn't they allow you to have and epidural if you have a tattoo on your lower back? What does one thing have to do with the other?

Re: Lower back tatoo vs epidural
Thanks everyone for responding! She'll be thrilled - she was asking me how she could do it w/o an epidural & was how painful is it w/o drugs. She's really planning ahead

Re: Lower back tatoo vs epidural
I have a tattoo on my lower back and i have another one on my foot. The only thing the hospital asked me was when I got them and I told them a few years ago, so it wasnt a big deal. I think if its a recent tattoo that can cause a problem, but no one gets tattoos when there pregnant anyway so.....

Re: Lower back tatoo vs epidural
My girlfriend just had a baby on Monday and she asked the anesthesiologist (since she had heard this and our other girlfriend has one) and the Dr. said only if he could "work around it", meaning if he could maneuver around it or go between ink- this was at Winthrop hospital. We thought it was ridiculous too...but I guess it depends who your anesthesiologist was.

Re: Lower back tatoo vs epidural
This is the second time I have heard this today.
I was at work and a co worker of mine saw me leaning over and said wow I didnt know you had a tattoo on your lower back. Then said you know if you are pregnant you cant get a shot in your back if you have that.
I looked at her like she was bonkers.
Whoever came up with that tale???
Good to know it's not true

Re: Lower back tatoo vs epidural
I'm an L&D nurse and most anesthesiologist will give epidural/spinals provided they don't have to inject directly where the tatoo is (there are many different spaces they can choose from) so basically it should be find unless you have a tatoo that covers your entire lower back
