Re: New Orleans and all the people who stayed...
astro dome offered spots to 25k. they said this morning they have 70k people. and it is people out of control with guns. I guess it is all about who gets to go on the bus. could you imagine that though? It would be like telling everyone here that we are bringing you to a dome in Ohio.

WOW weren't they supposed to evacuate people from here last night or this morning? What's holding them up?
I'm not really sure. They have taken some to Houston, but I think that the crowds have turned so angry that the operation has been halted. I also heard that getting enough vehicles through to the dome was proving to be very difficult. On CNN.com they have a few really disturbing videos.

I heard in the Astrodome last night people were attacked, robbed, and many were raped. CNN reported that three people actually were killed by others in there. I would be guarding my children and precious things in shifts. It's crazy.

Re: New Orleans and all the people who stayed...
I know they said people were giving out free gas and there were buses at no charge- the mayor really did a good job providing FREE service for all to get out. Many people stayed b/c they didnt think it was going to be this bad too. I agree too , it would have been very difficult for me to leave without my pets- I dont know what I would have done. I tear just thinking about it. I did hear that they may not be able to rebuild new orleans. such a shame

Re: New Orleans and all the people who stayed...
You know, I havent heard anything about the mayor or Governor sending busses or trucks BEFORE the hurricane to help aid in the evacuation of New Orleans.. Personally thats what I would have done If I was in their shoes.. If they would have been gone, no-one would have been left to Loot, no- one would be in the state they are in trying to sleep a night at the dome, in those conditions..
But not for nothing, some of these people have no concern for the llife of any others.. After the toilets started backing up they started peeing and sh!tting in the seats of the stadium.. How gross!

Re: New Orleans and all the people who stayed...
I think everyone should have tried to get out. I think a lot of people wanted to be "taken care of" instead of taking care of themselves (welfare, anyone?). There were evacuation procedures in place -- for everyone. MOST did not leave because they didn't want to. SOme saw their "opportunity" to rob and steal and loot and ..well you see what is happening.
It is a shame and sad and awful and so depressing ... human beings acting this way...what are you going to do with that huge tv you stole?? You don't have a home, electricity, nothing.... so you shoot at people trying to help???

Yes! People want to be "taken care of" when they are floating their spouses bodies down a flooded street. When they drown in their attics.

Re: New Orleans and all the people who stayed...
I don't see how total evacuation was ever possible...
Katrina was barely a hurricane on Friday, lots ignored it on Saturday (expecting it to be torn apart by passing over mainland Florida, as storms typically are), and then when they woke up Sunday morning, it had 175mph winds. By Saturday night flights were cancelled.
It is just not feasible to evacuate more than a couple days in advance. For a storm that is going to hit the Eastern or Gulf Coast, the amount of uncertainty about where it will hit is just too great for any period of time greater than that. Even for two days warning, as in this case, you can't evacuate the coast from Pensacola to Corpus Christi: that's about 20 million people.

Its easy to call people idiots while we sit up here in NY. Who knows what everyones individual sitution or mindset was/is. The point is whether you obeyed the evacuation or not, you are in trouble anyway. Both evacuatees and non are in a state of devestation. Who are we to say what we would have done if it was us? We may panic and not do the right thing either.
Well said!

You honestly think they stayed there so that they could be in the situation they are in now? Starving, degydrated, dying?

I'm sorry , but what a heartless and ignorant statement. To compare staying in your home to the abuse of wellfare is a comparision I don't understand. I don't think that you can say that most of the people who stayed in their homes did so because they wanted to. Yes, there was limited transportation provided by the city government, but not enough for the entire city. A massive evacuation isn't as easy as they make it seem in the movies.
Yes, it is sad that times like these will bring out the worst in some people. To clump them all into that catagory is rash and IMO wrong.

Well-said Heidla. As many others have expressed in this thread, it is very easy for us to sit up here in our homes, with our air conditioners, computers and all the luxuries that we take for granted that many of these people have never and will never have - and pass judgement on others less fortunate. I wish the negative thoughts and energy so apparent in some of these posts could be turned into something positive, like HELPING these people!

I tend to agree...when I came on to LIF tonight, and the last day or two, Im shocked to see these threads get so many "hits" and responses, but my prayer thread and the donation threads got very little notice or responses...Is it really that we all care so deeply or love us some drama?
Maybe everyone should go spend some time donating a few bucks instead of arguing what could have happened..should have happened...would like to have happened and why it didnt...
