Re: Spinoff to kids & age appropriateness
I say around age 13 or 14. Probably more for my piece of mind than anything else.

Re: Spinoff to kids & age appropriateness
My thoughts were the same as most of you...when you're old enough to pay for it.
I've seen that phone that has only 2 preset buttons to call mom or dad...or whoever. I think that's a good idea.

Re: Spinoff to kids & age appropriateness
Uh oh.. I bought my 10 year old a pre paid cell phone for his birthday. He doesnt take it to school but I make him take it when hes over a friends house or staying after school....
Hes been really responsible with it.. I started it off in January with 30 minutes and its march and he has ALMOST used up his minutes..
The phone was a 40 dollar tmobil and the minutes arent expensive.
Most kids in his 4th grade class have one now. I personally like knowing he has it sometimes.

Re: Spinoff to kids & age appropriateness
Although I am really against cell phone for young kids, I can see getting a pre-set number phone for a middle-school aged child. They can keep that until they're old enough to pay for a phone.

Re: Spinoff to kids & age appropriateness
I also agree to wait until they can pay for it, that's what my parents did for me. However, I do like the idea of having those preset phones for middle-school aged kids, for when they go out with friends without parents. Too many things can happen.

Remember when you were a kid, and if you couldn't call mommy or daddy because you forgot your gym clothes or whatever (my mom didn't drive anyway ).....you had to....gasp!!...just DEAL with it, and take RESPONSIBILITY for your forgetfulness, error, whatever?

I would have gotten in more trouble from my parents for forgetting than I would have gotten in school, so I just dealt with my consequences at school.

Re: Spinoff to kids & age appropriateness
I don't know anymore, I would have said 16 or 17 if I didn't have a friend with a 12 year old daughter. I think it depends on how responsible the child is and how well you monitor it. Also, pay phones are not as accessible as they were years ago. Both my friend and her husband work, so if her daughter needs a ride home from school or is staying late last minute, she has a way to call and tell them or another family member. But, she is very responsible with it and my friend totally watches to make sure she doesn't abuse it. She makes NO personal calls from her cell, my friend checks the bill each month. I think it's worth $10/month for the peace of mind.
Now, on the other hand, the girls you were originally talking about are a whole other story. I think it's disgusting when parents allow their children to wear makeup and walk the mall at 10 to 12 years old. I think I was about 16 before I was able to go hang out at the mall with my friend.

Re: Spinoff to kids & age appropriateness
I think as young as 12 or 13 if it's for emergency purposes, like if the child takes a bus to school, and it's understood or pre-set that s/he can only call certain numbers. Then when she's old enough to pay the bill (or at least part of the bill), she can have a regular cellphone. I had a cellphone with pre-paid minutes when I was 15 or 16...I didn't abuse it, so I got a "real" cellphone when I was 18 and started driving...I didn't start paying for my own until a few years later.

Re: Spinoff to kids & age appropriateness
For emergency purposes -- the phones with the 4 programmed numbers is fine. That should be adequate until they are old enough to pay for their own phone.
