Re: Adult children on their parents health insurance until they are 30?
I think it's a great idea. I was on my father's plan until I was 25, which was great b/c I had health coverage throughout law school. If you're unemployed or a full-time student, I think you should have the option of being on your parents' health insurance plan.

I'm sorry, but I have to go against the majority here. I don't agree. I think that at 30 years old, you shouldn't be relying on your parents and their health insurance. JMHO. At what point will people be independent?

Think this is a great idea... Mine ended the DAY i graduated college...and I was 21. My parents ins. ended for me when I turned 21 OR grad. college-which ever came first.
Yes, some ppl take advantage of it..and even though I NEVER go to doctors, it helps when theres an accident and you really need to go to the doctor.

Posted by nov04libride Purchasing from university plans are actually not too expensive. Most are $2000 or under for the year, which I made waitressing for a month during the summer.
thats pretty cool. I didn't realize health ins was available through school.
How was the coverage though? Were the co-pays a lot? What about drug coverage?
When I went back to school full time, in another state, I got my own policy and had an HMO that wasn't prohibitively expensive and the coverage was decent. When I moved back to NY, the individual policies were so high, I couldn't afford it, so I got the school insurance. The coverage was just OK, but I had to go through the free clinic associated with the school policy before I could be referred anywhere else, which was a nightmare. Also, the drug coverage was terrible.
I am fine with the age going up to 25 to be covered on a parent's insurance if you are a full time student. Most people at that age are pretty healthy and probably don't incur a lot of cost to the insurer anyway. I think 30 is pushing it. I do think this article highlights the larger problem, which is that so many people in the US go without insurance because they can't afford it.

Re: Adult children on their parents health insurance until they are 30?
After I graduated school, I had to go onto COBRA insurance until I could find a full-time job with benefits. Unfortunately, I broke my foot during that time, and had to go to the doctor every week to have it looked at and go to physical therapy for it. Plus, I was working retail at the time, so I had to cut my hours down since I couldn't stand for long periods of time on a broken foot.
Was I upset at the time? Yes! But it taught me how important health insurance is - and helped me learn how I have to take care of myself and not rely on my parents to do it for me!

People should really provide for themselves after 23.
Get a job at starbuks if you need medical coverage. You can work there part-time and still get medical coverage.

I'd be grateful for 25.

I say either work part-time at a job with benefits (Starbucks, etc.) or do the university insurance and pay for that with loans. I think maybe because everything gets taken care of for them, students are taking longer and longer to graduate to put off joining the real world.

I agree, 25 is reasonable but 30 is a bit much.

Re: Adult children on their parents health insurance until they are 30?
I do not think that 30 is appropriate - 23 - yes, 30 - no! As others are saying, you can even get a part-time job that has medical benefits like Starbucks. My sister works at Trader Joe's - she had to wait for three months - but now she has insurance through them - and it's good insurance too!

Re: Adult children on their parents health insurance until they are 30?
I don't see anything wrong with it. So many of my friends do freelance work and health insurance is just not part of it. Also starting a new business is so tough without having to worry about health insurance.
To me, health insurance is just a necessity and I don't see anything wrong with relying on your parents for health insurance when you are starting off or getting in school. In reality, most people chose paying for rent, school, car, etc.... over paying for health insurance - which is so expensive. I am not in favor of having your parents support you after school, but health insurance is so important and something that people don't value- so they let it slip. It is also so limiting- if you want to go back to school- its so hard to and try to find health insurance.
