Re: Spinoff to Brent/Apprentice: Do you think overweight or unattractive people face bias in the workplace?

I completely agree....however I do agree with bxgell as well. It works both ways. Unfortunate but true.

I agree as well - I def think it works against you, but also can work against you sometimes if you are attractive or young. I remember being 24, having my first corporate job, and being at a trade show. I'm trying to talk business with vendors - all older men - and they are just looking at me, flirting, giggling, and complimenting me on my hair and my tan.Chat Icon

I also know though that my supervisor LOVED it and that's why he sent me to the trade shows (instead of my boss - who was busted)Chat Icon

I think too, that attractive people have more confidence that comes from being good looking.

i agree. Chat Icon

John Tesh (yes, i listen to him Chat Icon ) was actually talking about this last week- in a study, over 80% of employers chose the applicant (Just based on a PICTURE) of the person that was wearing a Suit, over those that werent (though, still dressed 'nocely'). They were saying that How a person maintains their 'physical stature' can be indicitive of how they handle their work. Even down to well manicured nails- they figure, if they are detailed about something like that, they will be detailed about their work, as well.

But, it didnt make any mention of weight, just 'physical appearance' in the broad sense. So, i dont know why i'm really posting this here Chat Icon

But on the flip side, being young and cute can also hurt your career. I'm an attorney and I can't tell you how many times someone says to me "You're an attorney?!". I get harassed all the time by other attorneys/judges. Granted, sometimes I use their perversion and stupidity to my advantage (just won a case last week flirting with a judge), but other times, it really hurts me. Meanwhile, I have a co-worker who is my age, but not exactly the cutest thing you've ever seen, to put it gently, and clients tend to favor her over me because they take her more seriously... either way looks play a role.

I completely agree with this.
