Re: What do you consider to be making a "good" living

I can say we're pretty comfortable... 2 salaries, where 1 salary (the smaller one) is enough to cover the mortgage and monthly bills, and the other is for saving or whatever.
Far from rich, but pretty comfyChat Icon I also consider this a "good living" since we are both young and have only been in the workforce a few years... I feel our salaries can only go up from here.

Re: What do you consider to be making a "good" living

I think when one owns a house & doesn't have to live pay check to paycheck they are making a good living.

I am not one of those peopleChat Icon

I think a good living is when a couple's salary is 40% of their yearly mortgage.

A "good living" is being able to save money while still enjoying things- travel, dinners out, etc. Nothing first-class, but that's fine.

In some ways I am still getting used to a)splitting bills that used to be all mine (phone, cable, G&E). That does make a difference. And b) Not living paycheck to paycheck. When I first started teaching I'd get the occasional parking ticket, either at home or at school and that was enough to send me into a panic, because that fine really put a dent in my finances at the time! Those first couple years were tough.

Re: What do you consider to be making a "good" living

For me "good" living means not living check to check. Being able to pay all bills, save money (emergencies, retirement, and college for kids), travel, entertainment, etc.....

That's me too!!!! I make an embarrassing amount for a person with a bachelors. However, my next job will be more $$, and I should be satisfied both with the job (I hope) and the salary. (although to others in the field it's underpaid for our value to society!)

I think we are pretty comfortable now, but once we have the house, it will be a little tight till after the wedding (in May).

.. of course we can always use more $! Chat Icon

ETA: We have never lived paycheck to paycheck and can't imagine what that's like.

We are doing well.

DJ - Things will work out fine. We thought the same thing at first. Once you get a handle on your monthly expenses it'll be easier to manage. Plus, you'll be getting a larger refund check from the Feds.

pretty comfy? Maybe because I see EVERYONE'S salaries since I'm in HR.

You'd be surprised to see how easy it is to earn $250,000 per year as a salary for just being in the right place at the right time and saying the right thing.

So, to me, "comfy" would be DH and I each earning $175,000 per year.

Same here plus owning a house is on the list for me.
DH and I are pretty comfortable with both our salaries. Me staying out of work unpaid for a few months and only going back PT will change things but we will still be comfortable otherwise I wouldn't do it.

Yeah but I am banking on that cash to help pay my bills.... so I will be adjusting my W4 to get more take home money. So I won't be getting much of a tax refund anymore.

But I am still going to try to continue to put in my 15% to my 401k. But I might have to cut that down as well. Chat Icon

At least I am still DJing... so that really helps for now.

It'll still be a little bit more. However, since you are buying towards the end of '05. The benefit won't be seen until '06 taxes

Re: What do you consider to be making a "good" living

Well right now I am still claiming single zero. So I get a refund in the thousands.

When I get into the house... I will have to claim like married 11 or something like that in order to take home enough pay. That number should make me break even with the taxes and I won't be getting any more refunds.

But at least this year I will get one last good refund.

But the house is worth it in the end.

How are you able to claim single? I thought if you were married for at last half of the year you have to claim married? As per the IRS website your marital status as of the last day of the year determines your marital status for the whole year. Can you FM me if it's different? Thanks! Chat Icon
