Thanks everyone. Now I have a great list to work with. I am teaching a class called College 101 for incoming freshmen but I also run informal support groups and general get togethers for the students and like to show movies with meaning.

I'd recommend Shattered Glass - about Stephen Glass, who got fired from The New Republic after it was revealed that he was making up stuff in his essays. Aside from being a good movie, it show them that there are real consequences to plagiarism and making up lies in your writing.

I would DEFINITELY show them the documentary THE YES MEN (2004)

I show parts of it in my comp 101 class - it's about two guys who run a website that parodies the world trade organization (international body out to deregulate trade laws) - they get invited to conferences and give purposefully OUTRAGEOUS speeches - like "bring back slavery" and "let's recycle human waste and feed it to people in the 3rd world." and apart from one speech where they go to SUNY Pottsdam - all the audiences accept their theses and even applaud them. They give a speech to a room full of PhD's in finland about bringing back slavery and people just accept their message without argument. It's unbelievable.

The whole point of the documentary is to argue that oftentimes if you look a certain way and talk a certain way, you can convince people of anything - people dont think critically anymore.

It's frightening to watch but always gets the class really riled up.

I agree with the _Yes Men_ nomination.

Also:

Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room
The Corporation
Outfoxed
Ma Vie En Rose
Dancer in the Dark (terribly depressing, but raises interesting ethical issues)
Paris is Burning
Cache (has one very graphic scene)
