Equal, Sweet and low, Splenda, Brown sugar,...
which do you use? I overheard a conversation at jury duty that all except for brown sugar and regular sugar causes cancer!
Is this true?

Re: Equal, Sweet and low, Splenda, Brown sugar,...
Equal and SnL have been shown to cause cancer in lab rats in mass quantities. There is a disclaimer on them now.
Splenda hasnt been around long enough to know the definite effects of it. But when you change a chromosome from sugar to make it sucrulose IMO cant be good.
MMMMM sugar

Probably.
I can't stand artificial sweetners. For awhile there I got used to Equal. Then I got PG and couldn't stand the stuff ever since.
I had splenda in my coffee this morning (cause I ran out of regular sugar) and all I could think was how could something with such a chemical aftertast be good for you!

Nutrisweet is present in the diet coke/pepsi I drink all day long. If I have a cup of tea I use a little sweet n low and a little equal mixed.

How funny you should say that. I forgot to get sugar and I only had brown sugar. I asked DH if he thought brown sugar would be good. I didnt try it in my coffee though so I cant tell you.

Re: Equal, Sweet and low, Splenda, Brown sugar,...
I think the jury is still out on that. There are websits devoted to the harms of these chemicals.
Aspereteme has been linked to autoimmune diseases like MS, scelederma, etc....
Spelenda has been linked to a bunch of other bad stuff.
Basically- anything that isn't natural and made of chemicals can cause damage.
During my pregnancy I have stayed away from these. But when I am no longer pregnant, I will go back to my diet coke and my diet yogurts. I would just be careful with the amounts.

I think thise is a key point....I think as long as you don't abuse it you should be ok. I like to think I'm a Diet Pepsi addict because I have one every day!

Re: Equal, Sweet and low, Splenda, Brown sugar,...
The reason why Equal, Sweet & Low and Splenda are no calorie is because they are not recognzied by your body as a nutritional substance. The body views them as chemicals/poisons. Because of this, they are sent to the liver to be broken down. If you have a lot of these products in your diet, you are basically overloading your liver with processing these poisons instead of allowing it to do its normal jobs such as:
Break down the major nutrients in foods (protein, fats and carbohydrates) Store vitamins A, D, E and K Build proteins Remove waste products of nutrient breakdown Make and secrete bile
This past January I stopped using articial sweeteners all together and try to stay away from sugar as well. Instead, I use Stevia as a sweetener.
Stevia is a natural, non-caloric, sweet-tasting plant used around the world for its pleasant taste, as well as for its increasingly researched potential for inhibiting fat absorption and lowering blood pressure. It is sold as a suppliment, not as a sweetener, so it can be find in the supp aisle of Whole Foods.

I'm a Splenda Girlie.... Before Splenda, I used to use regular sugar.
How does Stevia taste? I've seen when I go to Trader Joe's by my house or Whole Food stores here in the city. I heard that you only need a little bit of it because it's a very potent sweetener. Does it have an after taste?

Stevia is good. It is VERY sweet. If you are not used to it it does taste different than sugar. I dont think it has an aftertaste.

Yes, it does have an after taste BUT so do Splenda, Equal, et al.
I used to be a HUGE nutrasweet girl... and that took me time.
I figure, it took me about 2 weeks to get OK with it... but if it's for my overall health- it was worth it.
In coffee, i find it's easy if you have a cafe au lait, or cafe con leche (coffee with steamed milk- the steaming sweetens the milk).

Re: Equal, Sweet and low, Splenda, Brown sugar,...
I never liked artifical sweetners and except for a brief Atkins stint which I used Spelnda I never used them. But I have heard they cause cancer too.
I switched from reg to organic sugar 6 months ago. It is brown and granulated like Sugar in the Raw, but not the brown sugar you use for baking. Dominoes now makes an Organic Sugar.
I have Stevia in the house from when I made lip balm for my SIL's baby shower favors, maybe I should give that a try.

I don't really use artificial sweetners. They all taste gross to me.
I don't know about brown sugar in coffee or tea, but I LOVE to eat it plain. It's bad when I'm making cookies - I have to control myself!!

Re: Equal, Sweet and low, Splenda, Brown sugar,...
Regular sugar. I do drink diet soda/iced tea maybe 3 times a week, so I don't think it's a lot, but regular sugar is what we have. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
