Re: attn: Vegetarians.......
I don't serve meat to guests in my home and at catered parties I don't serve lamb or veal. But I don't tell anyone what to eat when I'm not serving it

I really had a big debate over my car seats. I thought about it for weeks. But someone told me something that made sense. To make the vynils and synthetics puts a lot of chemicals into the environment, so leather is actually more environmentally sound
I wouldn't go that far...it takes just as many chemicals & dyes to make leather. It just doesn't come off the cow ready to wear.

I'm not a vegetarian, but isn't the whole meaning of a vegetarian is that you don't eat any kind of meat (fish included)?
Yes, you're correct. When I was 100% veg it irritated me when someone would call themself a vegetarian, but ate fish...and here I am (a lot less militant than I used to be wrt vegetarianism). If people need to label me, I say I'm a fish eating vegetarian...it's much easier than explaining what I don't eat.
However, it shouldn't be anyone's concern what the point is or isn't...jmo. militant vegetarian!! that's hilarious!
I agree w/you.... it's no one's business. however, if a vegitarian made a omment to someone (like when you were militant about it) and then they found out you ate fish/chicken, etc... I think they have a right to their opinion since they were provoked.
LOL - I used to call people like me (pesce-vegetarians) PESKY vegetarians. I thought they made it hard for people to understand what exactly a vegetarian was since everytime I asked a waiter what the veg option was, they'd always point out the fish
Imo, don't talk the talk if you can't walk the walk. I wouldn't dare tell anyone what or how to eat (now that I'm no longer militant ) so I expect the same courtesy. For some reason meat-eaters are VERY defensive of their meat and like to target vegetarian's (at least in my experience) which I always find amusing - whether provoked or not. This conversation reminds me of the Seinfeld episode when Elaine and Jerry go to a house party on Long Island and there’s a woman there with a fur coat. Elaine starts with her and the woman asks her if she’s a vegetarian.
Elaine “yes” Fur lady “do you eat fish?” Elaine “yes, but fish have no feelings” Fur lady “and how do you know!??”

That's true, too. I think at the time I read articles about it, etc.

Nope, no fish. I agree with the other posters that say you're not really a vegetarian if you eat fish, but hey, you're doing more than most so !

Fish isn't a vegetable either...it's a living being and you eat it's flesh. That's meat, sorry.

Re: attn: Vegetarians.......
I am no longer a vegetarian (I eat chicken), but when I was a full-fledged veggie, I did not eat fish. I used to get mad when people would call themselves vegetarians, but ate fish, however, I realize that it's just a label, and who cares what anyone else eats? Right? But let me tell you, I only eat chicken because I really cannot eat nuts, I don't really care too much for soy and I can only take so much texture veggie proteins, and trying to explain to people that I do not eat anything other than chicken is always such a freaking production. When I tell you I ONLY eat chicken, why oh why do I always need to list then all the things I DON'T eat? If it's not chicken, and it was living, I don't eat it!

imo fish is NOT in the same category as meat. i dont consider it meat. an animal? maybe, but meat? nope.
look at a calf, then look at a fish.... the same thing? not even close. fish arent tortured from their birth. its a totally different situation.
i never label myself as a "vegetarian". i dont eat vegatables!!!!!! BUT its alot easier to nod when ppl ask if i am rather than go into a 5 minute long explanation of my eating habits.
but like i said, i think that eating fish is MUCH different than eating meat, mammals, land animals, whathaveyou

Re: attn: Vegetarians.......
I know non-vegetarians who won't eat veal for moral reasons. That's really the only thing I get upset about at all is veal.
There are a lot of reasons why someone would believe that fish is different. It's not farmed and killed in the same way, doens't have the same capacity for pain and is on the other end of the taxonomic scale from humans. Also, in the Jewish religion, fish is not considered a "meat" and can be eaten with dairy.
I don't really feel that eating meat or fish or not is a huge moral issue with black and white, but more of a personal one. Would I rather not eat fish? Yes, but I have health problems, and for me to live a healthy lifestyle, eating fish fits in better than not eating fish. Some people feel there's no point in being a vegetarian, you have to be vegan, or if you eat vegan, it doesn't count unless you shop, wear and live vegan. Like everything else it's a spectrum, and you have to do what's best for you. If I don't eat fish, but I'm unhealthy, I'm not really serving any of god or nature's purpose. I tried to go vegan for awhile but I found I couldn't sustain it. At the same time I don't take the thyrid medicine that was prescribed to me because it contains pork products. So, we all make our own choices.
It doesn't matter to me. You can say I'm not a *real* vegetarian if you want to. It doesn't bother me. It's just the easiest way to describe my eating behaviors. I know someone who is a vegetarian but eats food with meat in it. I also know "freegans", which to me is the weirdest thing in the world. It's understandable, but still weird. If a cheeseburger were free, I still wouldn't eat it.

whatever...I should have prefaced it to say TO ME...FISH is not meat....Thats my own opinion and some people agree with me. Most of teh vegetarians I know eat Fish.
The vegan people Im friends with agree that that there choice is mainly due to the ethical view of what goes into killing and collecting food from the animals....Fish are not "tortured" in any fashion. A fish has a 2 second attention span, cant feel pain.
But thats besides the point...
the point is I dont eat meat, but I do eat fish and I am not a "moral" vegetarian...I do it for health reasons....
I think arguing about a "label" is retarded ...a word could mean different things to different people.
