You all asked for it....
OK, so every winter, we get some snow
And every year there are a gazillion threads about it:
I Hate Snow Snow Days Will the Schools Be Closed Etc.
My question is ( and I'm honestly not trying to be a smart azz) -- when did we become so afraid of snow and use it as an excuse to get out of work??
People, snow is FROZEN WATER.
Now I know the drivers are gonna flame me, but here are my perceptions.
-- Unless public transportation is closed, you really have no excuse. The only excuse I can see is if you have ABSOLUTELY no way to get to a train station. But if you can walk or take a bus to a train, you should do that.
-- If you have to drive, I know it is a pain, but you CAN drive in bad weather. We do it in rain all the time. All it means is that you drive extra carefully. And in most cases, if you are driving on heavily populated roads (highways), the snow doesn't accumulate much because everyone is driving on it. Just go slow to avoid sliding. If it's REALLY bad (i.e. a blizzard) then I can see offering to work from home (if you can), or making arrangements to stay close to the job.
-- Most companies, on bad weather days, don't care what time you get in, but DO appreciate the effort. So, if you get in at 10, it's not the end of the world. It looks good when you make it in (especially when others don't). Or, you can simply venture out earlier.
-- Finally, the above opinions do not apply to those who are pregnant. I agree, in bad weather, if you feel you will have a hard time getting around, you should stay put. Also, if you have kids and their school is closed and no one else can watch them, that's a separate circumstance also.
There you have it. Enjoy rebutting and offering opinions
Maybe you can send this little mission statement to the MTA... if they go to work I'll be able to get to my job ontime this winter.
And the argument about leaving earlier doesn't usually help... the early trains are delayed as well, so you're still stuck either waiting in a cramped room where degenerates feel the need to urinate on the walls, or you're standing on a platform 20 feet above the ground freezing your a$$ off.
Certain train lines are worse in the winter than others... I am on the Long Beach Branch.. seeing as how the train needs to go over a narrow railway over the water makes it all the more difficult for it to be ontime when it's windy, raining, or snowing...
Here's my warning.. I'll be b*tching about snow this winter, so if it annoys you... don't read it...
b*tch all you want, but to stay home because of it is silly IMO
and no one said you had to be "on time" Companies make allowances for lateness based on weather. It's all about effort.

I can theoretically do all my work from home, so if I can stay in my house doing my work rather than spend 2 hours shlepping to and from work, I don't see how it's silly. I will agree that people do take advantage of the situation though...
In my office, if you're not "on time" you might as well not come in.... not that I'm ever on time... but that's the vibe you get...

I agree - if I'm not coming in I would def. work from home. It's like some people just get a "free day" because they decide they don't want to try to come in. That's not fair for the people that schlep into the office.

Re: The Public Demanded It: The Captain's Snow Vent
Listen lets face it - we ALL want a day off!
If you can get away with it at your job with no repurcussions, can 'work at home' and do not affect the life of your coworkers because you decided not to bother to come in - then fine, by all means go for it
Just that SOME of us do not have that luxury to just call out and say screw it, my job will understand, or what have you. If you are taking the snow day and using your own time off, I guess that is OK also. I just think that people do not even TRY to make any attempt to come in. At the very sound of them PREDICTING snow, people are already making plans for a day off the next day. And then if the snow does only amount to a dusting, they STILL call out
I dunno, maybe I've been working too long - it just irks me
BUT YES we all have a right to whine, hell I'm whiny when I see the snow too because I KNOW my day at work will be HELL after I've trudged in and gotten dumped on by everyone else's bosses, since their assistant just could NOT be bothered to show up

Re: The Public Demanded It: The Captain's Snow Vent
I became afraid of the snow when i have to drive in it. I became afraid of the snow when i watched the car in front of my spin out and slam into the guard rail
I became afraid of the snow when my dad fell, was unconcious for a few minutes and spent the day in the hospital ER
I became ANNOYED with the snow when i spent over 6 HOURS on the road to get home

Re: The Public Demanded It: The Captain's Snow Vent
Well, my company doesn't do snow days. It's "use your own discretion and if you feel it's unsafe, don't come in" BUT, we do have to use our own time if we decide on that plan, so, what I see is that people will drive in (like I undoubtedly will) in unsafe conditions. Where I am there is really no public transportaion to speak of - if I could take a train in, I'd be fine - but, I have to drive on mostly often unplowed roads, or badly plowed roads. Have you ever tried to drive on the east end of Sunrise highway after a bad snowstorm before 9:00 AM? It's not really that great. I guess I do have the bonus of not many cars on the road, but I hate the feeling that at any moment, I will be heading off the side into a ditch. I drive slowly, but it's still very scary. So, yes, I would like it if when we had a bad smowstorm we would be closed. And yes, I know we won't be, and yes, I will still come in, but YES, I will complain about it and I don't think that I should feel bad or like I am somehow lazy b/c of it.

Re: The Public Demanded It: The Captain's Snow Vent
For those of us in more rural Suffolk who are not on a bus line and cannot take a train to work, snow means driving in snow. And while I grew up upstate, I never had 4 wheel drive or an SUV, and there are times when I have been stuck in my Civic at the bottom of a hill, unable to get up. So unless you drive every day and have driven a small car in a foot of snow, don't comment on the difficulty of driving in it. It was much easier when I was taking the train into the city. Even if it was delayed an hour I felt safer than in a car. And many jobs, from my experience, are not just happy you made it in at all. My office opens at 9. If no one is here, that means people might be waiting outside the door with no one here, which is unacceptable.
