Does this sound crazy for a 5 year old birthday party...

DH's nieces birthay is this week. Saturday is cake with the family and Thursday they are doing the kiddie party. Now they are doing it at White Post Farm (I'm sure you LI ladies have heard of it). From what i've heard it's $28.00 a person.

I don't know what possessed her to invite 30 kids. she invited all the kids in her daughter's dance class , the kids in her class and some neighbor's kids. So far 25 out of 30 are coming...When my BIL saw the bill he flipped his lid cuz it was for $700.00 for an hour and a half! and all my SIL said was " I didn't think they would all come" I've heard white post farm is a nice place for kids hence making it a reason to bring your child there.

I think it was too much to invite all those kids. 25 is way too much for a 5 year old kiddie party. My BIL was like "next year we are inviting only 5 or 6 kids to the house and ordering pizza. I don't blame him for being upset. Poor guy works his *** of at two jobs while his wife spends the money on silly things.

Re: Does this sound crazy for a 5 year old birthday party...

It is crazy but I do it every year also.
All the kids invite their whole class.
my 9 year old party is next week.. its bowling.. a bowling party is about 20 dollars a child.. we have about 18 kids so far.. plus then cake is extra and the hero for the parents.. goody bags.. etc..

We did white post farm a few years back.. I remember it being about 22 dollar a kid when I booked it..

Welcome to childrens birthday parties..unless its in your home.. its mula

It's crazy to invite all those kids to a 5 year old's birthday party. Knowing that it costs mula I wouldn't invite so many kids. Otherwise you gotta just have the party at the house. I would use my mom's basement though. My apt. is too small for 25 kids...LOL

That's another thing. Maybe some of the parents will stay with their child. I know I would stay if I saw 25 children at a party that my child was invited too.

i don't think it's crazy at all. it's the same as throwing a big 1st bday party. between family and friends, i think i had just about that many kids at both Danielle's and Sofia's 1st bday parties. granted, they weren't at a farm (which actually sounds like it will be alot of fun for the kids) ...but it sure beats having to prep, clean up, etc.

I am having my own at the end of MayChat Icon

But I still think it's too much to do every year. My SIL only invites a few of her daugther's friends for her birthday party every year and she takes them places.

And to supervise all those kids. I would loose my mind.

It sounds like it will be a big fun party. I know it might seem excessive but for the most part I believe this is the norm today. If I could afford it, I would probably do the same. JMO

Re: Does this sound crazy for a 5 year old birthday party...

I think $28/ pp is a little much, especially for children. They couldn't offer her some sort of discount or something for bringing so many children? Usually when there's a lot of people, like when a class goes there on a field trip or something, they offer a discount rate. She should look into that.
Plus, like other people said, that's a lot of children to supervise. It would be different if it were in a house, but in a place where the kids can run around and get separated, it's going to be difficult!

i know...that's why i said that. Chat Icon

every year!? No. absolutely not. i agree with you there.

Sofia will have a "nice" size 5th bday party, as did Danielle. after that, it's 10. for Danielle, when she turned 10, we invited 5 of her closest friends and went bowling. FUN!!

Bowling is sooooo much fun!

I definitely will want to do that for my son when he is older but it will have to be 5 or 6 of his closest friends.

In a perfect world...money would be no object for me.... and I would be able to throw parties like that for my children... but realistically... I cant!!!

I would be mad if I was her DH too!

Re: Does this sound crazy for a 5 year old birthday party...

I think it is totally absurd. 30 kids for a 5 year old. C'mon...that is way too much. I actually like the approach my mom had when we were growing up...when you are 5, you can have 5 friends at your bday party, etc. What ever happened to some games and cake at home? Everything is way over the top for kids today. But I guess that is a whole other topic.

That's all there was when we were kids. We didn't have all these fancy kid places.

Nor does she understand how hard her husband works to make money. He works two jobs, and at the rate she's going he'll be working 3 jobs soon.

we understand the value of money.. Why would anyone think that becuase my DH and I enjoy throwing birthday parties for our children and have no problem inviting the class?
My son has also been to everyone elses birthday parties in the class..last week it was at Hit Kingdom ( which is about 20 bucks a kid) and again the entire class was there.
As far as supervision.. nobody leaves their children alone at that age.. all parents stay.

My other son is turning 2 on saturday and its just my parents coming over,, no party but once he starts school we plan on letting him invite the class as well..

When I was my older sons age I had rollerskating parties and movie theatre parties and again.. the entire class was always invited..

I Still think 28 Dollars per person is a lot for 25 kids. They are not a 2 income family.

Re: Does this sound crazy for a 5 year old birthday party...

I think each family needs to set their budget for these parties. I know some people think Molly's party are too expensive, even though both have been that home, because I do printed, designed invites (Thanks SonicStefChat Icon , make the house look a certain way and just because it is home doesn't = cheap. I spend more at home than some do having the party out. But you know what...I enjoy it, every minute of it. I want to do it and we can afford the party. Now my husband would rather us have 10 people over for cake/coffee and buy 2 balloons...but he gets the big VETO on that from meChat Icon BUT we are not struggling finanically. I don't think it is crazy to invite 25 kids to a party. I think it is irresponsible to spend $700 on a party when you can't afford to or it impacts your ability to pay your bills. It doesn't matter how many incomes you have because many 2 family income are struggling too.

So crazy, in general, no. Irresponsible in this case, yes.

I think it's easy to judge what's crazy when you're not there yet.

Joseph is 4 & started to get invited to birthday parties last year. They invite the whole class. So his party rolls around, I'm also going to invite the whole class. The question is where can you have 25 kids indoors unless you have the house space to accomodate them. (That's why warm weather babies have home birthday parties).

White Post Farms is great but pricey - and there are a lot less expensive places. So while I think the price is crazy that they charge - I think your SIL's only fault is not discussing it with your BIL prior.

I agree. I also agree with the PP who said that the mistake was not consulting her husband on this matter.

Re: Does this sound crazy for a 5 year old birthday party...

My SIL usually has around three parties (one for family, one for friends, one on the day of, etc. etc.) for each of her children, every year. I think that's crazy. But whatever. It's not my place to say anything. I go on my designated date, wish them a happy, hand over the gift, have some cake, take a few pix and I'm on my way.
