I think in E. Northport you can find a 4 bedroom for under 700- it's a really good SD and its only 20min to Huntington!
I did a search on the real estate section on www.nytimes.com and quite a few came up for that price!!

Look at Greenlawn too. It's right next to Huntington. There is also Centerport. Out of the surrounding areas, Huntington, Northport, E. NPT, Commack, Greenlawn, Centerport...Huntington tends to high the highest tax rate.

im a fan of the setauket area... 3 village is a great school district, so is smithtown school district... we just moved to rocky point... i wish we could have afforded 3 village though...

I would say seeing how high you can go I would look into setauket i see people recommended that as well but the area that is 3 village school district is good or miller place area. rocky point is nice i just moved from there but the hills are killers and there are some bad areas there as well so wouldnt neccesarily suggest it. have you looked into like village areas like the village of northport i dont know if you want south shore or northshore but villages are normally good school district smaller amt of kids to a class and better neighborhoods just an idea this is what me and dh looked into cause we were concerned with school too. if we would have the money we would have moved to setauket prob hands down especially since dh works there.

i would make an appt to see this house. i know it is over your price range but if they are willing to negotiate, it is definetly worth it. the area and SD are AWESOME.

Try Kings Park. I grew up there and absolutely love it there! Good schools, very close to beaches, train station, main street, and close to parkways.

Since you really don't know that much about the area. I would go with your DH to Huntington Village and drive 25A east. You can go exploring the different towns and see what areas you like. It would also give you an idea of how long the commute would be.

I checked elwood and the northports cant touch them- they are expensive. you know why cause we need 4 bedrooms and 2 baths, I checked msli thanks to scott and the houses were eh.
My friend around the corner is selling her 4 bedroom house in East Northport for $699k (and that's for sale by owner). Are you sure you can't find something in that price range? She has almost an acre of property.

Definitely check out Nesconset. The houses are in the high 5's. They are center hall colonials with 4-5 BD. Not Victorian, but beautiful. My SIL lives there and the schools are excellent. I saw a few new houses being built in Kings Park that were more the new victorian type. Do a search on MLS. Kings Park is very convenient to Huntington. You can take 25A. Thats where I would want to live if I worked in Huntington, no highways!
