Terrible first day
It makes me very sad to post this. My first day was horrible. My first into to the kids was in my 1st class when I was told, "We made the other ***** leave, you are next." I was told to go f-myself, I was told that I would be f-ed up, and I was told to get in a gang for protection. The students were out of control. They have been without a teacher for a month and they were truly out of control. I have NEVER seen anything like this nor have I EVER been treated with such disrespect. I spent my entire lunch period in tears!
Threats, detention, screaming, calling home, etc... none of them seemed to work. I left a few messages for parents but do not hold out much hope.
I felt like I was in a juvi hall, not a school!
Not to mention, I drove an hour and a half each way!
On the way home, I called my mom, a teacher of 30+ years who told me we cannot be compatible with every situation and with all people.

ouch- I am sorry. Is this a public school? Does the princpal know what is going on in this class? Is is every student or is it a select few?
I would ask which of them are there to actually learn and which just want to fool arround. Those that just want to fool arround send to the principles office. Teach those that actually want to learn.

Daniela, I am so sorry this happened to you. What were your responses to them. What did you say or react to that? Don't give in D, I know it has to be hard and I can not imagine being in our shoes, but I think these kids are so used to given up on that they put on the tough act. Tomorrow I would begin the class, with maybe letting them them know how you work and how you are used to treating your students.

I am so sorry to hear about your first day! Where are you teaching? My first job was in a district very similar...I had rose colored glasses and thought I'd change the world. I stuck it out for 5 years, was tenured and decided to leave for a district that valued education...I could not be happier! Keep your head up high and do what is best for you! Please be careful...you must remember you come first!

I taught a 5th grade summer school class in a bad area on long island a few years ago. I was called a white b!tch and everything else. I walked in there and they thought it was a big joke.
I said to all of them as they were jumping around the room..."Look at you...look at what you're doing? You all think you're so funny and that school is a waste of time...so why do you even come? I don't need to be here...you do. I did this years ago and obviously went on to college, which most of you aren't going to go to." I also told them that we're seperating the room...these people want to learn, these people don't...so that means I'm failing this half because they don't care and they can do it over in the summer or just get left back. Who wants to try to be something and do something with their life? Then you're on this side of the room...congratulations....you have a future.
Apparently my little speech worked on these kids because at the end of the summer, they were hugging me.

THey dont recommend sending the kids to the principal because when you are new, you need to "prove" yourself...they want to see that you can "handle" the situation...not that I am saying this is an easy situation...I say, whatever you do, don't let them think they are getting the best of you! Then you lose all together. Is there a teacher you feel comfortable talking to? Maybe he or she can help you!

D- I would do as Stephanie sugested, then I would make each one of them stand up individually at their desks and ask them to read a portion of the days lession out loud (aprox 3 sentences per student). Those that can read, I would tell them to sit down and thank them for their participation and to sit down. If they can't or will not participate, then I would ask for their names. At the end of the reading participation lession I would call all of the students that cannot read and ask them again if they can't read. If they can, then tell them to sit down, that cannot read tell them you will help them or get them help. For those that can read but didn't make them do it, but make them read more than the ones that cooperated with you.
I would be firm with them. They need to know that you are in charge and their bullying will not work on you.

Hang in there... I started out in a very similar situation, so I know how it feels.
You really are better off not sending the kids to the principal/dean. Then it's not your room any more, it's the principals. The dean at my first school (I.S. 666) gave me that advice, and I always remembered it, and always pass it on because it's true.
Something that helped me- I made a chart with all their names and made sure they knew I was noting every little thing- plus and minus. That helped a lot. They freak out when you think you are writing about them. I used to doodle on a clipboard, and they'd get stressed. I also have a notebook where I write down my "observations". This helps a lot if you need to do anedotals for the really, really bad ones.
This is extreme, but if you are comfortable- I pulled out my cell phone a couple times in the classroom, to call parents. You may need to make a public example out of them. Or, if your room has a phone, see about getting an outside line.
They sound like little shits and some of them really might be, but I bet that most of them really are testing you. DO NOT be nice to them, you really have to meet them at their level, as sad as is it.

my mom isnt a teacher, but she works as an aide for a TERRIBLE school...shes gotten called horrible names, had a french fry thrown in her eye and all sorts of things..
i suggest do what stef suggested!

I am not sure what grade you are teaching, but are their other teachers around that you can send the students to? When I first started it also looked "weak" for new teachers to send dstudents downstairs. Since I work on a team, we typically send the students to each other's room when they need a time-out. It usually works well and you aren't bothering anyone downstairs.

I'm sorry you had a horrible first day.
You should make up an extremely hard test tonight, with a lot of questions, with stuff they will learn from their text for the rest of the year. Go in tomorrow, tell them to take their seats, they are having a test. Tell them if they can pass this test they can teach the class (or you could have some kind of other reward) if they fail, they need to sit their butts down, open there books and get to work.
Also, try having a chat with them, tell them to close their eyes and give them a glimpse into their future if they don't start cooperating. Tell them you get paid whether they sit and owrk or act like idiots, so lets make the most of our time. Outline what you plan to do with them, exciting projects etc. Tell them if they want to stay and learn great, you are more than happy to have them, if not tell them there is the door, go transfer out of your class and have a wonderful career at the local supermarket or McDonalds.

Sorry to hear it didn't go well. I had the class from hell my first year of teaching, but lucky for me I taught high school and only had them for one period of the day.
What really helped me a lot was reaching out to 2 veteran teachers at my school. They gave me some good suggestions, but even better, they were there to listen, since they knew the situation and the kids. Sometimes the calls home do help, because it is amazing to see sometimes if you can get one or two of the kids in line, the others may improve. Sometimes threatening the kids to call home doesn't scare them, but when you actually do it, some of the parents might follow up with you. I also tried to find out if there was a grandparent, older sibling or other family member to reach out to for help.
I truly hope it gets better for you, and if it doesn't, dont' give up, try another school or at the very least to start at the beginning of the school year. Starting mid-year really is a challenge, even in the best school.
