I don't think so. I think you need to go to a health food store.

You can get it in a drugstore, or maybe the health-and-beauty section of the supermarket.

Castor oil is not a cooking oil. It's a strong laxative.

Are you trying that concoction that brings on labor? I think it has castor oil, orange juice, and baking soda in it. I had the recipe and almost tried it, but never did. Hope it works!

ETA: that my friend SWEARS by this. She had it and within 2 hours she went into labor.

Castor oil can help get you into labor, but be careful how much you use.

I am not sure of the exact recipe, but I know my friend was told this by her Dr to take. I dont know how the recipe could be dangerous though.

Re: CAN I GET CASTOR OIL AT THE SUPERMARKET??

it is indeed dangerous! Every woman is different but it induces severe diarrhea which SOMETIMES brings on labor, so... 2 things, 1) you may not go into labor and then you will be miserable having to spend the day in th ebathroom feeling like crap with diarrhea and sometimes vomiting, and 2)you can easily dehydrate yourself, and most important, you don't want to have diarrhea on top of being in labor, that would be really annoying.
I swear by doing squats and there is medical evidence that doing squats helps the baby descend down the bith canal. I did squats ALL DAY the night that I went into labor. Good luck! Your little one will be here befire you know it!!Chat Icon

p.s- some docs recommend the castor oil but they give strict instructions on taking it based on your weight, past GI history, etc. You have to have the correct dosage.

I wouldn't take matters into my own hands.. Trust me, I know how you must feel right now. My second child was 10 days late and I was ready to stick my hand in and pull him out!

But please hang in there! he/she is obviously not ready to come out yet, so be patient.. Chat Icon

Re: CAN I GET CASTOR OIL AT THE SUPERMARKET??

I found this:

Castor Oil to Bring on Labor

First let me just say that I do not recommend this method. That is because I used it with my second child and it was just about the most horrible mistake I could have made (other than maybe getting another epidural, anyway).

The theory behind this induction method is that the castor oil causes diarrhea and the diarrheal cramps cause sympathetic cramping in your uterus, another smooth muscle. This is another of the methods that "won't work if you're not already ready anyway", as the sympathetic cramping will be ineffectual if all conditions are not already optimal for labor. In my case, my contractions began 10 minutes after my first dose of oil, hours before the diarrhea began. Therefore, it could not have been the castor oil that brought on labor in my case, and I caused myself all that trouble for nothing.

There has been much debate over whether taking castor oil to induce labor will cause the baby to have its first bowel movement in the womb before birth. This pre-birth bowel movement, called meconium, can be dangerous, because if baby inhales some of it it can cause pneumonia in the lungs. Meconium is also a widely-held signal that the baby is in some sort of distress. Most professionals with any experience with castor oil inductions agree that this is untrue. They have found that there is no increased occurrence of meconium in castor oil induced labors over spontaneous labors.

The real danger lies in the mother when using castor oil for labor induction. With the severity of the diarrhea, a laboring woman can quickly become dehydrated. Especially in a typically highly managed hospital birth where a woman is allowed few fluids. Dehydration makes one tired and less able to endure through physical activity. Plus, not only does this endanger breastfeeding (proper hydration is necessary to make adequate milk), but a dehydrated uterus is an aggravated uterus, and an aggravated uterus causes more pain for the mother. More pain makes a woman less able to handle natural child birth and puts her and the baby at increased risk for a snowball of interventions.

Re: CAN I GET CASTOR OIL AT THE SUPERMARKET??

Sounds like what my Mother did to bring on labor when she was pregnant with me. She ate Laxatives and she ate too much, she had the worst diarrhea and it didn't even bring it on. I was 9 days late Chat Icon

OMG.. who would take this knowing it causes a possibly risk to the baby?
Imagine going 9 months and then doing something stupid at the last minute that hurts the baby?

Please.. dont do it

I was given the reciepe by my midwife. Dh went to Walgreens and pick up the Castor Oil. I have also seen it at supermarkets. Once you know what your looking for you'll notice lots of places have it.
It really takes a small amount. I took mine @ 10:30pm approx and by Midnight I was calling L&D at 5:17pm I had my son.

My clinic would not induce and my husband was getting ready to deploy . I was having labor pains frequently that would be 5 minutes apart and would go on for hours and just end. Was basically fully effaced and 2cm before I drank my cocktail and it was a full moon.
