I also don't smoke. I kind of took a puff once when i was 14, mostly just to get people off my back. I regret it, but at the same time I'm glad I did because my 'friends' never bugged me about it again.

i am a smoker and yes, i am embarrassed and insecure about it. i want to quit and will quit 1 day but now is not the time for me. there is not 1 positive thing about smoking but there is a definite sensation that cannot be described. as assinine and insane as it sounds, part of me is afraid to quit because i don't want to gain weight. telling a smoker to just quit is like telling an alcoholic to stop drink or someone overweight to lose weight. smoking IS an addiction and one cannot quite because they are feeling pressure from others or society. the want and willpower HAS to be present.

Nicotine addiction is stronger then heroin addiction so I truly hate when a non smoker says, Why not "just "quit... If it were that easy I'd have done it , well, 14 years ago....

eta- I just noticed theres more smoker and ex smokers then those who never have....thats interesting...

i have to ask...but if you can quit for your unborn child...
Why can't you just quit for YOU?

Honestly..i know many people that just "quit"
No it isn't easy, no it isn't fun

But it can be done...AND a lot easier than heroin

it is hard to quit, It is an addicition like every other drug, it is a habit and most of all it assessible. I mean the laws are making it harder on smokers, but still it is the one "drug" that you can get your hands very easy.

I commend the quitters, I further commend the people that have never smoked but I do think that unless you have smoked you cannot condem people, it is a horrible disgusting habit no doubt, but it doesnt make the person sad, it just makes them human, we are all addicted to something, unfornately ciggs kills and that alone shoudl make a person stop but hey not that easy.
Also to quit for your unborn child is alot easier then quitting for yourself. It is another life it about accountability.

nobody was condeming ANYONE....
just looking to understand..
and i agree i think the assessibility is a HIGE factor in it..
And no i am not going to ever fully understand. Which is why i asked a question i was looking to try to some how...
Lots of addicts write book to help us understand it and what they go through. I asked hoping someone could explain it to me.

But again i understand that someone would stop smoking to not harm an unborn child.. But why isn't that drive to stop to save your own life there?

This is a touchy subject for me as someone who's mother went through all of it. And me being the daughter who watched it.
Watched feeling a lot of anger that my mom didn't stop. Didn't think of me or our family more than a cigarette for many years.

Just relating MY experience and feelings

ETA...and i do see the hypocracy of it all. Lots of us do things later could cause us problems...I have my own. Just was looking to see this aspect of it.

I understand where Jen is coming from. Having watched DH lose 2 family members to smoking related lung cancer made me really wonder. We all do things that can be harmful like Red said and I do not think smokers are bad people or anything of the sort but every time I see someone light up, I just wonder, WHY?

DH never, ever touched a cigarette but his mom smoked around him his whole childhood. It makes me livid to even think about and if something ever happens to DH because of it, I will go ballistic!

I wish there were an easier and easy way to quit. We should be able to quit for ourselves, I guess it is like anything else, once it becomes a habit is loving yourself enough to stop that destructive behavior. I totally understand why people do not understand it, it seems very simple smoking kills. I guess we just have to be supportive of our loved ones that smoke in hoping that they will stop
