I could care less...I throw them out as soon as I get them anyway...a person has a lot of time on their hands to be worried about whether they get a thank you note...jmo

I do agree that it is rude to not send them out especially for a wedding...but like Red said shower, b-day...not something I'm going to fret about

Im confused So you care or you dont care?

I don't expect them for birthday or Christmas gifts but I do expect them (and in a ralatively timely fashion) for any formal party like a shower, wedding, christening, communion, etc. I don't count the Thank you for sharing my day notes on the favors as a real thank you note.

I consider them real thank you's especially when you are thanking the person not only for sharing the day but for giving a gift... Do you need to thank them twice by sending another note??? How many times do you have to thank a person??

Only one thank you is necessary but I think it should be sent/written by the recipient of the gifts and personalized to the gift giver.

I had over 100 people at my shower, I'm sorry but I was not about to write over 100 personalized thank you's...I did it for my wedding thank you's and my hand almost fell off....the people at my shower were already thanked with a note attached to the favor and in person by me....the only ones I did send a thank you card was to the ones that didn't come but sent a gift...

If you are OK with that, then that's all that really counts. You don't have to explain to me or anyone else why you didn't write your own thank you notes. But I know a lot of people that had large showers, myself included, that wrote out personal thank you notes. To each their own, I was just stating my opinion.

I know...you're right to each his own...I just didn't want to write out over 100 personalized thank you's when A. I was going to do double the amount for my wedding thank you's and B. people just throw them out anyways...

But we all do what we feel is best for us...

I don't care if I don't get one from a shower present or b-day gift...esp if I was there...

I think for a wedding its a bit more expected...overall I don't care

I expect a thank you for a wedding or shower gift. It really bothers me that people don't have the courtesy to thank me for the gift I gave them.

I took the time to buy you a card/gift/money...you should have the courtesy to thank me for it. It's just plain rude IMO.

I totally agree. I was raised to always write thank yous and it's just stuck with me. And most people I know do appreciate getting handwritten thank yous especially in today's age when so many things are done by email, pre-printed,etc

I disagree. I get offended when people don't send thank yous.

Or, how we went to that Communion. We gave $125 check. Our "thank you" card didn't even say "thank you".

It was a 2 liner saying "I'm glad you came. It was nice to see you."

Me too! I mean, I don't loose sleep over it, but I just think it's common courtesy and nice that the person acknowledged and appreciated your gift, etc.

I agree here. For Christmas I really dont lose sleep over it, however, weddings, showers, bday gifts, etc. I think its the right thing to do to show you appreciate what was given to you. Even tomorrow we are moving and I plan to go pick up TY cards and hand them out to everyone who is helping. Again, I just feel its "right'.Chat Icon

This could be taken as slightly insulting.

I personally send thank you's for everything and iI feel it's nice to receive them too. I certainly appreciate any effort anyone puts in to anything for me.

Re: Thank yous ?

Its nice to know that people are thankful for their gifts and or helping them out with something so yes i think thank you cards should be sent out. i sent one out to my auntand uncle who coincidently was in Ac when we were in the same hotel and they took us out to dinner for our anniversary so i sent them a thank you card.

I was referring to this comment made by the original poster... "I was reading a thread yesterday about someone being upset that they didn't get a ty from a bridal shower and a wedding."

How uspet can you get that you didn't get a thank you? I don't believe that a thank you note needs to be sent for every little thing...HOWEVER, a THANK YOU should be said if a note is not going to be given...the person should be thanked one way or another...

Re: Thank yous ?

My MIL was INFAMOUS for not writing a thank you note. For all of my DH's events, she attached a tag to a favor that said, "thank you for sharing my Communion with me" etc.

Now, my DH cringes when he thinks about it. Although he never writes anything out himself Chat Icon , he always checks with me to make sure that I've sent out TY cards for gifts.

The favor tag is a nice gesture, but it does not replace the thank you card.

I personally am a stickler for writing them myself. I feel that I need to acknowledge the person and the gift because no matter how big or small, cheesey or elegant, I am appreciative of someone thinking of me.
When it comes to receiving them, I could care less, however, it kind of determines next time how generous I am, if that makes sense. If I receive a thank you, then chances are, I will WANT to get that person a gift because it shows me that they are appreciative. No thank you...well, we'll see. There are people who EXPECT A GIFT and if they don't write one, they will be surprised. Chat Icon

Re: Thank yous ?

For a birthday, xmas or anniv - I wouldn't look for a thank you card UNLESS there had been a big party planned and I bought them a really nice gift.
I do appreciate a thank you for someone's shower since I did put a lot of thought into the gift, bought it and spent a couple of hours of my life to celebrate with you. I do appreciate someone thanking me for that.
I was also raised that you thank people for going out of their way for you. I did it for my everyone who attended my bridal shower and wedding. I also send thank you's to anyone who goes a little bit out of their way to help me. A thank you card is a small price to pay for someone who has done something for someone else. And it puts a smile on their face.

But am I upset if I don't get one? No. I may wonder why the person did not send out thank you's but I would not be upset.

Im kinda big on thank you's. Well not big but I expect them and I think the only reason I expect them is because I'm such a stickler about doing them myself.

I dont know WHERE I got it from( maybe all the slack from not thanking people as a child..lol) but I send thank yous for everything...

And I like when I get one, not so much to even say thank you for this that or the other thing..but to show someone appreciated something.

I gave away some of my old wedding stuff on LIW and someone who I gave stuff too sent me a formal thank you. I didnt need that, but it sooo nice to see they appreciated it.

eta- I never got a TY for a <a style='text-decoration: none; border-bottom: 3px double;' href="http://www.serverlogic3.com/lm/rtl3.asp?si=22&k=wedding%20gift" onmouseover="window.status='wedding gift'; return true;" onmouseout="window.status=''; return true;">wedding gift</a> from like 2 years ago and I still wonder..we'll did they get it, was it not enough? LOL ..why didnt I get a TY? he he he. I Dont CARE really, but I wonder why because its typically done.

me too....i am a huge thank you person and everyone in my family - especially the older generations expects a ty....its kinda nice to see someone appreciates them, too....but it would save so much time and even $$ if i didn't have to do it sometimes!!Chat Icon

IMO, not wanting to do something doesn't take precedence over proper ettiquette. Personalizing over 50 TYs IS excessive, however, writing a couple a day for 2 weeks would help avoid anyone's hands from falling off.

her shower was a little different...Her BP had ALREADY made up TY's for her. So i think it would be completely unnecessary to send ANOTHER TY just because it is personalized. Lets face it MOST of the wedding and shower TY's are fairly general in nature anyway (of course sometimes people will state the actual gift, it isn't nec).

Either way, I'm sure most of the guests at the shower were disappointed that they didn't get a personalized TY afterwards. I would rather hurt my hand from writing, than have someone think I was being inconsiderate of their generous gift. IMO, TYs on favors are impersonal & informal, and should be followed up with personal TYs.

I don't really care either way. Like red said if you were already there and they thanked then that should be enough. It would bother me a little if I wasn't there and I sent a gift and they didn't send me a TY card.

For my bridal shower, my mom attached thank you cards to the favors thanking all the guest for coming and for their gifts. So I never mailed out thank you cards after my shower. Didn't need to...It would have been a waste. Had my mom not done the cards then I would have done it but thank god my mom took care of that for me. I did send out special thank you's to my mom and bridal party for all their work in planning my shower.

also she did say that had her mother not done the TY's already she would have done them...
