For those who have purchased a home in the last 6 months on LI
I thought this might be interesting. What is your combined income?

Re: For those who have purchased a home in the last 6 months on LI
what this poll doesn't take in acct is the amt of debt/loans you owe. Some people buy things and continue to live in debt..so while the poll does have some informational value it certainly doesn't paint the whole picture.

Re: For those who have purchased a home in the last 6 months on LI
if you knew how much we make and how much spend and owe to CC- you wouldn't feel so bad
it's actually embarassing
we had to tell my friend who did our Life Insurance our Income vs Assets
and Jake goes- you see any waste in that number- I wanted to die- and I am making every effort to change by the time I turn 30 in 9 months
it's sickening-
edited to add- everything will be paid off before we buy a house- lessons learned-

dont feel bad - like everyone said its more about spending habits. i know people who make more than me, but are further away from buying a house bc of all the other debt they are in.

Not only spending habits you should consider, but life. Some (like our situation) we've been on our own for almost 10 years. A lot happens in 10 years...for me - being out of work for 8mths. Paying for everything in our past 10 years by ourselves...never asking for help. Pride can be suck...

that was the problem- until we had a bad 2 months - we never thought about it- easy come- easy go-
now that things are back to normal - if not better- we don't want to make the same mistakes
Jake just amexes it ( our own verb) and he never looks at the bill- I used to just pay it- and finally I started emailling him his charges- and he was SHOCKED- over $2K a month easily ( some business expenses)- but still
that + the car we don't drive+ the rent we pay now = a mortage payment on a very nice house w/o really trying so hard

Re: For those who have purchased a home in the last 6 months on LI
Personally I think that its a right of passage to get yourself in a little bit of CC debt and then get yourself out of it and learn from your mistakes. When all of this happens before you get yourself into a real hole credit wise, it can really help you learn to appreciate everything that you have and not use CCs.
As for the poll - i guess its interesting to see but combined income really doesnt present the whole story. There are so many other factors like - family money you may have had, prior homes or investments you may have made a lot of money on, how much debt you are willing to be in, etc....

What you said about right pf passage for CC debt is very wise! I never thought of it that way before.
re: the poll, none of them are an exact science. it's a fun and interesting way to see how others are doing and get opinions while retaining anonymity.

Yeah - I post polls that are much less "informative" than this one all the time because i do find the results of some of them very interesting! Sometimes i wish you could do two or three polls at once like - how much do you make and how much did you spend on a house???? that wouldnt really work on a poll though and then the anonymity is gone. oh well....

I think this poll is not reflective of the average Long Islander. I guess this is true for all polls.
Reason being... I think the average visitor to LIF is more educated/making more money than the avg LIer.

DH and I are in the same boat. It is sad that combined we make more money than my parents do combined, yet they have a house, no CC debt, go on vacations, etc. I guess you live and learn. I would rather learn it now at 26, then at 45 and not able to make my mortgage payments, which there are a lot of people out there who can't. Let us learn from our mistakes and march on to a debt free world. Hi Hoe!!

What I am trying to say is that I do not that LIFers are representative of a true statistical sample of Long Islanders. I feel that just the fact that all of us computer literate puts us as at a higher income potential.

Re: For those who have purchased a home in the last 6 months on LI
When we went from an apartment to a house their was a signifant differene betwen the rent and mortgage and we thougth for sure it would be a struggle but we never stopped spending the way we did until now since I am home. DH would always complain that we never had money when we first bought our house and his parents never understood that because they put 3 kids through private schools all the way through HS, went on vacations and gave them what they wanted and they didnt make a lot of money. What we couldn't get them to understand was that their mortgage was only $500 a month and our is $2500 a month and now they dont have a mortgage all they have is taxes b/c their mortgage is paid off. We learned when we purchased our house that it never seems to work out on paper but it does always work out in the end.
