I thought the Pope did that?

It is done by Dioeces. I'm trying to find anything if Cardnial Egan has announced anything yet.

yeah, i dont get the connection either

but it's beaten into me so we still follow

it's giving up something you desire like Jesus gave up his life for you. Years ago, people couldn't afford fish (which is even more expensive than meat) to substitute so they ate eggs or potatoes for dinner ... now a days it's pretty silly since I spend a small fortune each Friday buying shrimp and clams and other seafood!

I don't eat it on Ash Wednesday or any Friday (during lent) and I don't make it for DH. But, I know he doesn't stick to it while he's at work.

No meat today and no meat on Fridays. This is going to be very hard for me this year personally because I have eliminated bread and pasta from my diet and am allergic to all fish . . . . .

It's usually Ash Wednesday and Fridays during Lent. I try to do this every Wednesday as well to make it more meaningful for me and to give up something more during Lent...this is besides what I give up to give up during Lent(whatever food it is)

Aaaah....that is a nice spin on it.

Re: Spinoff for Catholic Posters

Even my Nana, who is at church all the time, eats meat on Fridays for like the last 15 years. She said her priest told them it was fine. But more power to those of you who still follow this. It wouldn't be a problem for me, since I don't really eat meat. But i'm no longer a Catholic, either, so I guess it's not a problem at all!

They also do that in the Greek Orthodox religion (i think it might be all year that they do that, but i could be wrong). One of my best friends is Greek, and she never ate meat on wednesdays or fridays, and fasted during lent.

Re: Spinoff for Catholic Posters

We do...although DH trys to avoid it...

Actually the true reason people dont eat meat goes back to the fact that during "Lent" way back when, it was a time to allow the animals to fatten up ...Lenten means springtime...and it was designed to allow the food supply to build up.

Other Theories are that fasting prepares you for a feast ( Easter) or that fasting heightens the senses.....These theories are very recent ones established by the church but there is no "answer" to this question, which to me means Im gonna be ok in heaven not hell if I do...

BUT if you do choose to not do it for your own personal reasons, I commend you and think that its a great thing to do for yourself to show your faith.

If your giving something up, you shoudl know why IMO

Re: Spinoff for Catholic Posters

My mom and I don't eat meat anyway, but in our household those are "no meat" days... so I guess the point is even if we weren't vegetarians we'd still not eat meat.

We dont eat meat on ash wednesday and on fridays during lent.

This year St. Patrick day lands on a Friday, in the past they had lifted it so that you can eat cornedbeef. I hope they do it again this year. I love cornedbeef and cabbage.

Yes we can have cornedbeef. The Catholic Church was given dispensation for St. Patrick's Day.

It hasn't been given yet.
