School districts and houses
Okay, here's the dilemna...
Would you rather have a just okay (small, needs a lot of work) house in a great school district or a much nicer house in a okay to good school district.
The quality of education is really important to me. I have family who graduated from the E. Williston SD (Wheatly HS) and am very impressed with it. Roslyn and Manhasset are the other 2 SDs I'm seriously considering.
But I don't want my kids to feel like they have the worst house in their class when we could buy a nicer place for the money in...let's say Syosset which has a good school district but not as outstanding. But the house we could get for the same price would be much much nicer.
I don't know...I can't figure out if the trade off is worth it.

If the "worst" SD you are looking in is Syosset, you can't go wrong either way!! its a great district.
I wish I had your problems

(I would pick the larger home if its in Syosset)

Well - I actually live in Manhasset and while we do not have kids yet, I have to tell you the community is so down to earth that I dont think that your kids would feel bad about growing up in ANY house in the district.... It completely shocks me how down to earth people are given the amount of wealth that some people have.....
And ironically, we moved to Manhasset from Syosset and I will tell you this - I think it would matter MORE in syosset because it is a huge district and very competitive.... In syosset, you also have very wealthy kids from Woodbury and Muttontown in the district. I think that it definitely makes for a strange dynamic in the schools with such a wide socio-economic distribution.....
I am not as familiar with Roslyn except that our realtor told us that it was very competitive. I do believe that you can get a little bit more for your money in Roslyn over Manhasset though because the train line in Manhasset is a LOT better for those that commute to NYC.
Also - I just want to say again, we do not have kids in the district so this is just what i have observed as a member of these communities. I have no first hand knowledge!!!
Please FM me if you would like any more information about either area. I love it and can't even imagine moving back to Syosset....
ETS: I also loved living in syosset - just prefer manhasset! You really cant go wrong with any of the areas you mentioned!

I think Syosset is a very good district & if you are commited to your children getting a great education they will.
IMO parent participation is 75% of it, the specific district 25%. I don't like to feel economically pressured, so for me I'd rather have a bigger house in an area that was more attainable.

Yup, Syosset is definitely a good school district, but it is much much larger than E. Williston.
I guess my major concern is having my kids go to school with all the kids from Old Westbury and feeling left out somehow. I would consider myself solidly middle class and want to de-emphasize the importance of material things, but I don't know that having my kids see their classmates with "more" would help or hurt that.
Also, I went to watch my cousin's game at Wheatly and heard parents(!) making fun of the people from Carle Place and Mineola! I mean, last time I checked, those were really nice neighborhoods. Ugh. I just don't know if a great SD is worth it.
At the same time, said cousin is off to Brown. Her friends are going to Duke, Harvard, Dartmouth and Princeton, among others. But what separates a good school district from a great school district??

You wil find snobs anywhere you live. As long as you raise your children to not care about materialistic things, you will be fine wherever you send your kids.

If you are planning on having kids; I'd go for the best district you can afford.
My father lost his job while I was in school and we lived in a wealthy district. I remember it being hard seeing all the designer clothes and "toys" but I definitely had down to earth friends and didn't have to worry about it within my group.
I think you can tell alot about a school based on the amount of Ivy acceptances - they totally know the schools that are competitive.

I was speaking with a co-worker today and he told me his wife teaches in the Jericho SD. you had to hear the stories... she is an elementary ed teacher and the 6 YEAR OLDS talk about what restaurants they have gone to and show off their Coach bags!!!!!!!!

Jericho and Syosset are very similar in that regard. You can find it out by going to the nail salon in syosset where the 6 year olds are repirmanding the manicurists for using the wrong color. it's actually disturbing and disgusting at the same time. i can't even imagine letting my daughter speak to anyone - let alone an ADULT - that way.....

I would prefer a better house in a good district over a small house in a great district.
Any school district is going to have problems....and I would only worry about the really terrible one!
Also, keep in mind, a lot of times the really really wealthy districts have HUGE drug problems!!

I would go with the smaller house in the best school district.
It's up to you to teach your children that just because they may not have as much money as some of their friends, they are no lower than them. In the same way your children should know that they are no better than someone who has less money than them.
On Oprah yesterday there was some economic advisor from Clinton's Era who was saying the best thing you can possibly give your kids is a great education. In the long run, the material crap means nothing and the best education at the best schools opens many doors.

I watched Oprah yesterday for the first time in years - it was VERY interesting. And I agree with everything you wrote! Although all of the SD's she mentioned are excellent..... I am not sure it would make that much of a difference between the four schools....

We don't have children, but we went for a smaller house in a better sd. We felt it was important for resale value, but of course, sd's can change too.

I watched Oprah yesterday for the first time in years - it was VERY interesting. And I agree with everything you wrote! Although all of the SD's she mentioned are excellent..... I am not sure it would make that much of a difference between the four schools....
I agree with this, but a child that has stellar grades, National honor society, valedictorian & so on from ANY district on LI will have Ivy opportunities if their parents have planned it that way & the child was guided to acheive it.
I mean no disrespect to all the teachers(very skilled I'm sure) on LIF, but as a parent of a college kid I believe its the parents that ensure an excellent education. 99% of the districts on LI blow away the districts in most of U.S.
Our kids have a tremendous advatage already.
In my son's senior year of high school, his car slid on the ice in the student parking lot & he hit two cars belonging to other kids. They were BOTH brand new ESCALADES
This was in a MIDDLE CLASS town.
The pressure is so great here already, I'd hate to set the bar even higher.
I know its our job to teach our kids material things aren't most important, but I think it is a distraction for them.

I totally agree with this! I teach in what would be considered a "poorer" area of LI and I still see it everyday. Who has the latest cellphone or PSP? What jeans are that one wearing? What handbag is she carrying?
I also totally agree with Kelly's comment about parental involvement! I really don't think picking Syosset over Manhasset is going to make or break your child's admittance into an Ivy League school. It has more to do with what you and your child do with their education and the values you instill in them. The state has pretty much leveled the playing field with all of the standardized testing - every child takes the same exact test from grades 3 - 12 no matter what district they are in. Will a child in a wealthier district have more educational opportunities? Possibly. But again, opportunities are useless unless they are taken.

The districts you mention are all really good...it is really a location preference...Manhasset has a cute town feel, where syosset is set up different...you also might want to consider class size...I know in my husbands district class size is HUGE, and its a nice area...I too teach in a nice area, and our classes are much smaller, in my opinion smaller class sizes are beneficial.
