Re: Is it wrong for the catholic church to...
I can't think of anyone who is more entitled to drive around in a nice car. They are men of God, they give up a lot and live their life for service. I know that there are a few bad apples, but faith has to play a part. If you don't want to give you don't have to, but I would not judge someone driving around in a nice car. They are human

Re: Is it wrong for the catholic church to...
I think that they are great places for children to learn about family and community in addition to reading, writing, rithmatic.
They don't learn reading, writing and arithmatic in public schools? DH's niece goes to one of the best Public schools in Queens with an excellent computer program. I went to catholic schools all my life and I don't think there is much difference. Just the money. No matter how much tuition was there was always somethings that were not "included" like books, lunch etc. etc. That's all I remember about catholic schools.
Yes public schools are more crowded but just because the classes are more private in catholic schools doesn't mean that your child gets more closer attention. I remember students that were having problems in subjects getting left back rather than having them do some special tutoring program after school. Maybe it's different today I don't know but that's the impression Catholic school left on me after going for 12 years. I'm sorry but I am not sending my child to a school where all they care about is collecting money. With all the money these catholic schools have the nerve to charge, you'd think they'd pay their teachers a little better. Gee I wonder why so many catholic schools had to close down because of low enrollment.

Re: Is it wrong for the catholic church to...
I have been a Catholic my whole life and volunteered at a local Catholic Church for 16 years, working "behind the scenes" as well as up front. I can honestly say that I will never again put another dollar in the collection plate. All funds that are collected go into a general fund and distributed from there as needed. While you are thinking your money may be going to a specific place in your particular church, it is not. I am not talking about "second collections" for something that is outside the scope of the parish. My money goes into the poor boxes. As far as collections for "priest retirement funds", be assured, these priests are well taken care of. The money you put in the collection plate, already helps pay for that. It, also, pays their salary, housing, cleaning person, cook, car insurance, health insurance, pharmaceuticals, food, etc. In some instances (usually with the pastor), it pays for the car they drive. The only thing priests pay for are their own personal clothing. Even their robes are usually donated. While I don't envy them this, I think they should be more up front with where the money is being spent. When they take up a collection for the "nuns retirement funds", that will be one I will generously give to. These poor women have to fend for themselves. The church couldn't care less. So, if you question and wonder if you should put into any collection plate or not, don't feel guilty. I've been there and from what I've learned, I don't feel guilty one little bit.

Thank you for the insider info I was starting to feel like a bad christian because I was like "Uhhghhh, again" when the plate went around for round four.

I don't think she said ANYTHING about public schools; she was only giving her feelings about Catholic schools.
I too teach in a Catholic school and have been for 10 years also. I went to Catholic school for 12 years and I really believe in them. No one is saying public schools are terrible; there are wonderful public AND Catholic schools.
Not for nothing, but you sound like my HS students...complaining about tuition without knowing any of the facts. "All they care about is collecting money." First of all, nuns don't even get paid. I get paid very little comparatively speaking (like you said). So where is the money going?? To books...do you know each textbook costs like $60! To computers...my school has computers in every single room as well as 3 computer labs and a library full of computers. Our school has one of the best science labs around. The school is spending money on EDUCATION!!
I'm sorry, but I do get pretty defensive about Catholic schools!

Re: Is it wrong for the catholic church to...
Without getting into a big debate about what cars priests drive and where the money goes, I would just say:
1.) It's a donation. It's optional. If you don't want to give, don't.
2.) When I look at the number of people who attended mass yesterday, compared with the number of people who attend on a weekly basis, you can bet on it that I would be sending around the collection baskets a second time too if I were the pastor.
3.) My church didn't have a second collection yesterday and did a great job of welcoming everyone to mass, whether they were Catholic or not, and whether they come every week or not. It is one of the reasons I go to that particular church. If you are that uncomfortable with the things your church is doing, say something, or find another place to worship where you feel more comfortable.

Re: Is it wrong for the catholic church to...
I could not have said it better.....
And just to clarify what I said about Catholic Schools is that it will be my CHOICE to send my children there. I had wonderful teachers who helped mold me into the person I am today. My husband's experience wasn't the same as mine as not every public school is as fantastic as the one your niece is lucky enough to get into. But money plays a big role in even that public school. Let's be honest here, teachers aren't knocking down the doors at schools in less then desirebale neighboorhoods. They aren't running in droves to the South Bronx or Bushwick, so the students in those schools are short changed. The alternative for many of them is Catholic Schools.
And, did you know that tuition only cover around 2/3 of what it really costs to educate a child. The remaining 1/3 comes from fundraising. They recieve very little state funding even for support services.
Enrollment in Catholic Schools isn't going down because of the tuition. It is declining because many parents feel it isn't a priority any more. And if they live in a decent neighborhood with decent schools, then they are lucky.
We moved out of Brentwood after 20 years becuase of the school system. And even when my older sibilings were in school they went to St. John's. It was a sacrifice for my parents but they did what they thought was the best choice for their children.

I applaud you as well.
I don't mind giving to extra collections at my church and don't question what they do with the funds. I see improvements to the exterior and interior of the church and it makes me feel good to have contributed in some small way. Or giving $$ for flower donations -- I love how beautiful the church looks.
If I didn't go often and didn't have a connection to the parish or the priests perhaps I would feel differently....

Re: Is it wrong for the catholic church to...
my church will usually only ask for a 2nd donation if its for another cause - probably on easter the 2nd donation was your "easter gift" to the church - but usually the 2nd collection will be to support something else chruch related, ie - missions overseas, the youth group, etc. they usually annouce what it is for before the pass the basket.
its not weird to me @ all.

My church almost always has a second donation, it's always for a special intention, like the poor or the parish or the food pantry, hurricane katrina, supporting the school, etc. I wouldn;t worry about looking like a cheapo. You give what you can when you feel it is appropriate.

I am an active Catholic - I also run the Children's Choir, and have worked in a church rectory for many years.
The collection that is taken up every week goes to pay for the upkeep of the grounds and church bills as well as staff salaries. Almost always, it is never enough to keep up with the costs. Usually a second collection is taken up only on Diocesan approval and that money goes to the Diocese to be put in the proper fund. So the Priests Retirement collection does not go to your particular parish - it'll go to the Diocesean office and gets put into the big retirement account. It's like the Priest's 401k.
We had a huge turnout as well at my church - and not a word was said about people not coming to mass. Just a "Hope to see you again next Sunday."

Re: Is it wrong for the catholic church to...
Just a thought - priests don't take a vow of poverty. Many of them are very wealthy in their own right, and can afford a nice life on their own. IMO - implying that their lifestyle is completely funded by collections is a bit off.
Also - I'm a professional fund raiser....and while I have my own personal issues with the church (+ 16 years of catholic school), many of them need the money. If they don't ask for additional money - how will anyone know they need it?

This is the way almost any donation (to a church or a non-profit) works.
As far as asking for donations, they are asking not demanding. If you choose to put something in both plates then that is your choice if you don't like it don't do it.

It amazes me that people love to complain so much about the Catholic Church and what it does wrong. Why then do so many people run to the Church to get married or run there to have their baby's Baptized? If you feel something is so corrupt and so greedy then don't take part in it.

My church growing up always had two collections - the first was general offering/tithes and the second was called "the building fund".
