Re: No flames please: Help me anticipate what kind of responses I'd get wearing something like this

I'm definitely going to get it, or something like it. I've been looking for a long time, or trying to think of a design to create my own interfaith pendant. And my mom saw one on a catholic tv show, and she's ok with it. That's half the battle. Actually a lot of catholics wear them to represent the jewishness of jesus, but theirs are a large cross with a tiny star or david. I wanted something more balanced. That's why I sort of like the two-tone. The cross is smaller, but it stands out, so you can clearly see both. I don't feel that on this pendant one is more prominent than the other.

I showed FH and he really likes it Chat Icon

I would definitely think it's a Jews for Jesus symbol.
I would never wear it and it bothers me a bit.. I'm not interfaith, my marriage is. I'm Jewish, my husband's Christian.

Hope you don't take this as drama inducing Jen b/c that is certainly not my intention, just wanted to be honest!Chat Icon

I would assume you were raised by a Catholic parent and a Jewish parent.

I am Jewish, and DH was raised Catholic, and although I respect his religion (even if he doesn't these days), I wouldn't feel comfortable wearing it b/c I am Jewish. No offense.

But, it is a beautiful piece of jewelry.

i think religion is more what you do, then what you wear.

and i wouldn't wear something like that, but i am not jewish, nor is fh. i think its more how you act. and i think that whoever has a problem with it, that is their issue, not yours. you don't need to try to educate the whole planet

I find it confusing, and unnecessary. But, if you like it, it's your choice, and will be worn on your neck. Not flaming, just an honest opinion. I understand you are integrating both religions in your life together, but you are still a catholic.

Re: No flames please: Help me anticipate what kind of responses I'd get wearing something like this

Thanks for the opinions.

I wouldn't expect a jewish person to wear it, even in my aituation, because I don't think many/any jews would feel comfortable wearing a cross. The star of david si easier to itegrate into a christian context than vice versa.

I'd be wearing it for personal reasons, not to educate anyone. But it's clear that what you wear, especially it if'ts different can give people the wrong impression.

ETA: I don't really get what unneccessary means. Is any jewelry ever necessary?

No, its not. But a star of david with a cross in the middle is something that IS in fact un-necessary, and completely confusing. But, it's for you, and nobody else. If you like it, get it.

There is a reason why there are different religions, and you cannot believe in both, although you can respect both. I dont find the need to wear a pendant around my neck to prove that I respect the fact that my husband is an Agnostic, and I am a Catholic, even though I respect his religion.

And it does look like a JFJ symbol.

In response to "you're still catholic":

A catholic symbol doesn't fully represent who I am. I participate fully at temple services and during jewish holidays. I stuyd jewish theology and jewish scripture. That's why the cross alone doesn't tell the full story.

Because I don't want to.

That wouldn't fully represent my beliefs either. And my embracing of that symbol clearly goes well beyonf respecting my FH's beliefs.

In a way, you can be christian and assimilate your jewish roots because christianity was a sect of judaism and grew out of judaism, and jesus, our savior, was jewish and held these customs dear, so we can emulate jesus in following his customs and his ways of worshipping his/our god.

Since I do believe in Jesus, at least ideologically, it would be dishonest and meaningless to covnert to Judaism

Then it would also be dishonest to wear a star of david, with a cross (that Jesus was crucified on), around your neck.

Im sorry sweetie, I am not trying to be mean or hurt your feelings. It is not my intention.

No, I'm curious about why you think it's dishonest.

I was completely undecided about the GTG. I don't know that many people.

If I go I will wear my Tiffany "J" :-P

I feel it to be dishonest because you are wearing a Star of David on your neck, and Judaism is not YOUR belief. It is your husbands. I do not feel the two symbols belong together.

Re: No flames please: Help me anticipate what kind of responses I'd get wearing something like this

I am Jewish and DH is Catholic. We are going to try very hard to teach our children about both religions and raise them with both.

I know it will be a struggle but it is our intention to try our very best- and give our children a strong belief in God and the "golden rule" and to teach them about all holidays and customs.

I don't know if I would wear that necklace myself- but I hope my children will one day wear it proudly. I think it is beautiful. Chat Icon

ETA: I do believe that the symbols belong together very much- both religions are the same in the belief in one God and how to to treat others.

As a born again christian, I agree with connecting with our judaism roots, because we use both the old and new testaments. I like the pendant. Do what makes u happy.

Re: No flames please: Help me anticipate what kind of responses I'd get wearing something like this

You're free to disagree, of course. But if NUNS are wearing it, I don't see how it's dishonest as a catholic, especially since jesus was jewish and we celebrate the passover at every single mass.

But I understand what people's misconceptiosn might be, and that people don't quite understand what it means to me to be catholic, but have a strong connection to judaism, with no desire to convert.

In fact I wish there were a ceremony or a way to formally dedicate myself to judaism in some way, but converting is definitely not the answer.

However, I'm sure most jews and christians woud disagree with me, but I believe that the promise of salvation, and god's love is more important than whether or not one person 2000 years ago was the messiah.
