Moving...How Stressful?

Ok I just started packing tonight and I feel like Chat Icon! On a scale of 1-10 (10 being the most stressful) - be honest - how stressful is this moving going to be? We both work fulltime, both go to school at night, have an engagement party in 2 weeks, and a family wedding the week after that, etc. I feel like this is going to be very stressful!!! Chat Icon

So what do you think? 1-10 how stressful is moving???

Re: Moving...How Stressful?

It is very stressful...the worst part for me was moving the clothes. I hated that. Carrying all of the hangers and going through everything. UGH - i cringe thinking about it. And - unpacking everything pretty much stinks too.

But - it is well worth it in the end. I can help you unpack - ask Kim - I'm no joke. Chat Icon

Re: Moving...How Stressful?

About a 7. I think if you go into it expecting the worst, it will be a little better. Don't put too much pressure on yourself - for us, we were disorganized for a looooong time, and just cooking a meal was tough b/c we couldn't find everything, or everything was such a mess, or we were wiped out. So we ordered in and didn't feel guilty about it. It takes time to get things packed up and then unpackingChat Icon .

One thing I suggest is throw as much away as you can of things you really don't use, or old clothes, instead of packing it up.

Oh yeah, and give yourselves a break. Take a least parts of the weekend where you don't do anything but relax, go for a ride in the car, get out of the house somehow, just to clear your mind and relax, esp if you have no free time usually anyway. You'll need some down time or you'll make yourself crazy.

Re: Moving...How Stressful?

We have moved so many times, it's not really too stressful for me anymore, but you have a lot on your plate. Just try to get as much packing done each night as you can. Get plain paper to wrap glass/breakables...otherwise unpacking will be a nightmare if you use newspaper.

good luck; just remember you'll get through it!!

Re: Moving...How Stressful?

we are in the midst too - i think the packing was worse than the unpacking will be.

we numbered every box and made a spreadsheet to identify what is in everything...

we have an extra annoyance in our move because everything is in storage until we firm up on a house.

so we will be moving everything twice! Chat Icon

good luck - at least it is exciting, that should keep you motivated!

Re: Moving...How Stressful?

For me it was a 10+

We were moving from NY to FL. Hubby went down April 4. He packed a uhual with all of our big things (entertainment center, tv's, fridge, etc...) and I moved back with my parents for 6 weeks.

Over the 6 weeks I was going back and forth to the apartment one - two nights a week to finish packing what he couldnt fit (dishes, clothes, etc...)

It felt like it was never going to end. I packed over 20 boxes by myself all weighing between 50 - 70 lbs. Then I had them all shipped via UPS. UPS was awesome. The guy came up to the 3r floor walk up and hauled all my boxes up and down those stairs.

The stress finally left when I was landing in FL Chat Icon

Re: Moving...How Stressful?

We had movers and it was actually the best moving experience I have had to date. I have moved myself with a rental truck before and it was about a 10++. I loathed it. I could not get myself motivated to pack and it took me forever to unpack. This time DH and and I moved and unpacked in 3 days. It was about a 4 on the stress scale. Since it was paid for by DHs company I have no idea what it actually cost, but if/when we move again, I would pay them what ever they ask b/c it was really worth it.

Fortunately once we close we going to have about a month to move from our apt to the house, so it shouldn't be bad at all.

Good luck though, sounds like your schedules are a bit crazy..if you need help don't hesitate to call us!!

Oh yeah we'll def be using a moving company for our furniture and other large items, but we can move clothes and stuff over slowly, etc. When we moved last year apt to apt we used a mover also, Leonetti Brothers in Oceanside, they were great, made the move super EASY!

Oddly enough I enjoy packing up and moving...Chat Icon

Re: Moving...How Stressful?

I have moved A LOT and it gets easier each time, in terms of organization and I get better at throwing things out or donating them.

I also have boxed things and labelled them with numbers and made a spreadsheet when I moved cross country. I did this partly because I was sending boxes to 2 different addresses and didn't have a place to live yet when I got to my destination. The spreadsheet was great, because I knew exactly what was in each box.

My other piece of advice - pack EVERYTHING but items that are really necessary. Buy paper plates, plastic silverware and don't cook so much. Someone I know moved recently and waited until the last minute to pack up the kitchen and it was VERY stressful.

Re: Moving...How Stressful?

Moving is stressful. I actually created an excel spreadsheet and listed everything that I packed into each box so when it's time to take the boxes out of storage, I know what to find just by looking for a number instead of sorting through 3 different kitchen boxes.

Also, we used a moving company:
Johnson Moving Service
516-579-5429

DJPill recommended them and they were the reason the move was less stressful for us.

Good Luck! Chat Icon

Re: Moving...How Stressful?

It was a stressful 8.5 for us, he was working major OT & I was in grad school & last minute the guy that bought our couch didn't show so then I was worried about having to get the couch out (after the movers left)....packing boxes was beyond stressful. We then hired awesome movers to move us and they were awesome. Once we were in the new apt., everything was fine.

Re: Moving...How Stressful?

We just moved from VA to CO last month. The move for me was about a 9. For DH, probably a 3 Chat Icon
That's because I got stuck doing most of the packing. It took me almost an entire day to pack the kitchen and pantry!!!! And being preggo, my back was killing me from all the bending....
Just remember that if you think you don't have that much stuff, think again! You will find things everywhere that need to be packed that you had forgotten about (like pictures on the wall). Start packing as early as you can.

For me definitely a 10. We closed two weeks after I gave birth, and moved when she was five weeks old, the day before her christening.

I hope you've started packing early and try to enlist friends to help you---that saved us!
