I'd give at least $100. I used to do savings bonds but now I just give cash and let the parents invest it.

I would do either a $50 savings bond and an outfit/gift or a $100 savings bond.

DD recieved bonds and we are grateful, but we can invest money into a high yield savings and make wayyy more interest on it than a bond can.

I give savings bonds, I have older kids and they love to go cash them in when they are older. Chat Icon
Cash or checks are too easy to spend throughout the years (for a good reason of course) The bond can't be spent for years.

I agree. It better to start investments for children early and it can't be spent until they are older and can use it for responsible choices. I would give $50 in a bond.

Re: What is an appropriate gift for a friends baby - Baptism?

I think savings bond or cash is appropriate. But some people like to give gifts and I would get a nice outfit or even a religious representation of baptism such as a bible, a cross, or gifts like a piece of jewelry, music box or picture frame. Good luck with your decision!Chat Icon

Savings Bonds are great. I'm an honest mommy so I actually deposited all of his money in his bank account. $50 - $100 is fine. $50 is great and $100 is generous.

Re: What is an appropriate gift for a friends baby - Baptism?

Just one thing to point out everyone --- savings bonds have changed and you can't cash them in for 30 years now. It used to be 18 which was nice because the child hit 18 and had all these savings bonds to cash in -- but my daughter just recieved 2 savings bonds at her Christening and they won't reach their full amounts for 30 years!

I like to give cash. I think you get more out of it than a savings bond (investment purposes).
