The source shall remain nameless, but I totally think it's rude:

to ask someone how many carats their ring is. It's clearly a p*ssing contest. Sure, if you don't want to tell, you don't have to answer, so maybe I'm wrong...but I just don't like the idea of it. Is it nice? Does it sparkle? Do you love him. That's the stuff, then!

Re: The source shall remain nameless, but I totally think it's rude:

its really no big deal to some people - to them, its right up there with "what size shoe are you" or something like that.

I don't answer those questions, but I don't mind them either.

To each her own, I guess. Chat Icon

A friend of mine asked me and I told her it was a rude question and didn't answer. Then, she decided to debate with me why it wasn't rude to ask. Chat Icon

When people ask me....I admit I'm always a tad taken back! It's right up there with "How much do you weigh?"

Rude. Besides, you can get a ballpark figure just by looking, so why make people uncomfortable by asking?

I think it depends on who you ask. I wouldnt ask that question to just anyone, but if it was a friend of mine, i wouldnt feel weird asking. I love jewlery and am always commenting on what people are wearing, so im sure my close friends wouldnt think im being rude if i asked a question like that.

you can just say you don't even know, it's not that important to you, so you didn't even ask yourself!

I agree...I honestly don't know how many carats (exactly) my ring is...so I'm not "lying" when I say "I don't know."

How much is your mortgage?

Someone asked me that once....I guess I'm a total prude. I just think it's private info, baby!

I am the same way -- there are certain people I am more inquisitive with and more open with.

But I think in general I have a low tolerance for questions I find rude anyway.

I used to respond to "How big is your ring?" with "3 & 3/4." (My stone isn't 3 carats, that's my ring size).

My mom has foot in mouth disease & asks personal questions way too often. Chat Icon

Actually most questions don't bother me if it's just inquistivie (ie they're getting engaged, buying a house).

Yeah, I wouldn't do that and do not really like it when people ask me the same.. I just tell them I don't know and leave it at that..

When I was planning my wedding last year there was a post on this as well on liweddings...and the thing thats funny is that it went on for pages...with almost everyone posting the size, clarity, cut etc...I did NOT post rather just rolled my eyes. I think its so tacky!!!

The people who ask that dont even realize that carat weight does not make the ring, but CLARITY sure does!

I hate that. That and how much the wedding cost per head (um...rude)

My salary, my future mortgage (people ask what mortgage we are looking to have while house hunting) and my carat size are all personal information I DO not wish to share Chat Icon
