See, I thought that it could have been taken two ways.
He could have been beaten (remember Ledger's character had a thing with that going back to his youth) or maybe he really did get hit by a truck. I thought it was very vague as to what really happened.

i really don't think so...

And i don't think she said he got hit be a truck
From what i remember she said something exploded...but i could be wrong i watched it some time ago

and that she was very sarcastic on how people usually aren't usually unrecognizeable when this happens

Yea but didn't they do a lil flashback thing where it showed him getting beaten? (or am I losing my mind??)

Re: Just finished watching Brokeback Mountain, I have a question

She said he blew a tire and it exploded when he tried to change it.

I think as she is saying what happened to Ledger (her version with the tire!), we see what really happened. He was murdered for being gay.

This was exactly the way I took it too. He was gay, in Texas, in the 1970s and he was most likely caught with another man and beaten for it by strangers - like what happened with Matthew Shepard not too long ago. I think the wife's explanation was the story they were telling people to save face and not embarrass the family.

I got the feeling that the wife and his parents all knew he was living a double life.

Well, remember when Ennis was telling him the story about how he knew two cowboys that lived together and they ended up getting beat to death....that is how Jack died also. The tire thing was a lie. It is more clear in the story than in the movie.
