Re: Making the right decision
this post is getting a little hijacked but I think different people have considerably different ideas about what defines location or what a good neighborhood is. Neighborhoods do change for better and for worse in some cases. Sometimes more affordable areas (that are often considered less desirable)do become favorites of young hardworking people & the area does get a boost. My town gets bashed around here all the time, but I can't think of a place I'd rather live (and I've lived all over Suffolk county). To each their own really fits the bill when it comes to this topic. Only you know your financial situation & your comfort zone. Its nice to hear what other people think but they are only opinions.

Re: Making the right decision
We recently went into contract on a colonial that needs A LOT of interior work- total wallpaper removal, total painting, hardwood floor lightening, construction for a large master br suite/bathroom, new windows, new ac, etc... DH and I estimate the work to be about 100k. But, what sold us on the house was the amount of land on a quiet cul d' sac, in a prestigious/community type neighborhood, in a cute/un-developed town, in an unbelievable school system. It is also walking distance to town and train- about 1 mile. So I say... location, location, location and like Kathy116 said, over time we will do a lot with it! Good luck!!
I also think that land outside of NYC will always be valuable because NYC will always be just that. There is no place to move within 60 miles of the city that is undeveloped these days, so your land your house sits on is paramount. People will always want for that.

Re: Making the right decision
Thank you so much for the responses. It really gave me a lot to think about. Dh and I feel it is going to be a ton of work. So, we are leaning towards no. If I knew for sure that I would have enough money to fix it up I would be making an offer right now. However, it isn't totally off the table yet.
