FYI...the morning after pill doenst terminate a pregnancy...it prevents implantation....if you are already pregnant...it will have not effect on your pregnancy
That is a good thing to point out.

Re: FDA Allows Nonprescription sales of "Moring after Pill" for woman ove the age of 18!!
I dont know how I feel about this issue either.
On one hand I think it is wonderful for people who are responsible and maybe have an "accident" and so they use the pill in a responsible manner. And of course I think it is definately something that should be available because of rape victims and the fear of speaking out that is associated with that.
On the other hand I don't agree with people being completley irresponsible (which many people 18+ are) and using it all the time because they aren't careful.
It is so important to use protection, not just to prevent unwanted pregnancies, but to prevent all kinds of STD/STVs, and I hope people don't lose sight of that just because there is a pill like this available to them.

Re: FDA Allows Nonprescription sales of "Moring after Pill" for woman ove the age of 18!!
Those are good points, Mel.
It would be a horrible thing if people stopped using condoms because they feel they can always get Plan B, and then they put themselves at risk for STDs. However I think for the normal person, it's a good thing. If a condom slips or breaks, or you made a mistake with your partner and didn't use a condom or diaphragm, etc, then it could really help.

Re: FDA Allows Nonprescription sales of "Moring after Pill" for woman ove the age of 18!!
I don't imagine this will be readily available in every city, at every pharmacy. There are a ton of major chain pharmacies that don't even carry regular BCPs. This battle was won, but the war is so not over unfortunately.
I think instead of denying that teens will have sex, we should be educating them - both girls & boys - on the consequences of sex: STDs, pregnancy, the emotional strings attached, etc. We can't keep saying "just say no" - it's unrealistic.
ETA: The "morning after pill" is actually a cocktail of high dose BCP. Anyone who has taken the "pill" will tell you it's no picnic. It will make you very sick (as some BCPs will). Please give the benefit of the doubt to our youth that they will not just willy nilly have sex unprotected b/c they can go pop a pill. I find that logic patronizing.

I don't think people will start to be stupid and lax on birth control and protection, I just think those people already exist and there's nothing you can do about it. KWIM?

Re: FDA Allows Nonprescription sales of "Moring after Pill" for woman ove the age of 18!!
I just know that when I was in college a lot of my friends fell into the "irresponsible" catagory. I love my friends to death, but wouldn't put it past quite a few of them back in the day to use something like this on a regular basis because it was easy and available to them.
I have HPV -- and many people do -- the threads on the relationship board certainly prove that. Thank goodness there is more awareness of it now but still you talk to people and they've never heard of it or aren't aware of the implications of it. My sister is 18 and she is aware because I told her about my story with it -- but she talks to her friends and many of them just don't know, but are sexually active.
Bottom line is that whether this pill is available or not, education needs to be increased IMO .... so that if people do need to make use of things like this pill they are at least aware of the other consequences to their actions.

I don't know.
Huh?
I mean, I just cannot totall get behind this - but I suppose it really doesn't matter if I am or if I'm not.
I personally don't see it as progress.
That's just my two cents.

Do people not understand that this pill makes you very sick? I certainly wouldn't consider it an "easy" way out--or as easy as using BC...People I know who used it were vomitting for days and horribly ill.

Re: FDA Allows Nonprescription sales of "Moring after Pill" for woman ove the age of 18!!
I have worked with teenagers for over 11 years. Many of them have had multiple abortions. They actually view abortion as a form of birth control. This saddens me immemsely that they have little if no regard for life (their's or their child's)
I am not sure that just because you are 18+ makes you any more responsible then someone who is 16.
I agree that education needs to be improved. But, I am not sure that this is the answer either.

i understand what you are saying BUT there are plenty of woman out there that would like to have an option to having an abortion in the case of an unwanted pregnancy. This gives those woman....maybe some one in her 30's or 40's...an option. and again I will say it...if it was a MAN that was the one to get pregnant...these options would have been made available many years ago!!

I'm not sure I understand your meaning of responsible. Would it be responsible for these teenagers to have a child they cannot love or care for? Or to experience to trauma of giving a child up for adoption? Is that more responsible than preventing implantation in the first place?

I know of adults who have had multiple abortions not knowing what type of damage, if any, has been caused to their reproductive systems. I think that by having this option, it would certainly do less damage to a woman's system. When the time comes, she can have a healthy environment for her baby to grow.

Wow, I guess I am in the minority here. I think this allows people to be even more irresponsible when it comes to having sex.
In my neighborhood, there are pregnant teenagers all of the time but taking the morning after pill won't teach them to be any more responsible about having sex. Now they can have more unprotected sex and have an easier out!
I'd rather they take the morning after pill 10 times than have to go through the physical and emotional stress of an abortion once.

I have seen so many abused and uncared for babies that I am actually happy that these teens are making a responsible decision and recognizing that they are ill-equipped to care for a human.

Re: FDA Allows Nonprescription sales of "Moring after Pill" for woman ove the age of 18!!
I'm very happy to hear this!
There will always be people who are irresponsible and abusive of whatever options are available to them. Is that reason enough to outlaw everything that has the potential of being misused, even though there are many, many people who will use this pill responsibly? Making it available to people 18+ without a prescription means that all legal adults are free to make choices for themselves instead of the government choosing for them, so I'm glad this has passed.

Definetly not true.
I actually had to take it once when a condom broke.
