Constipation

My DS (only 4 1/2 weeks old) only has a BM every 2-3 days! I am pumping breastmilk and he gets 1 formula bottle a day. Last week I tried the Q-tip trick and no success, so my pediatrician recommended a glycerin suppository! It worked, but still he has a 2-3 day schedule. Anyone else have a similar experience??? I am at my wits end trying to figure out what is okay and what is hurting him.

Re: Constipation

is he in pain from it? Babies can normally go as much as several times a day to once every 3-4 days.

Alyson is every 1 1/2 days and it's usually not very much (she's on formula mostly) and it's very well formed which I think is causing her pain.

Re: Constipation

This is my son!!! He is 8 weeks and only goes every couple of days. We regulary need to "help" him go. I went to the dr on Fri and he said to give him some prune juice. It tried that and nothing, he also recommended Malt Supex (sp?) You can buy it over the counter and you put it in the bottle. I will let you know how that works.

He is so much happier after he goes, so I am hoping the malt supex will do the trick. A teaspoon in his bottle every day is suppose to help him get regular.

Re: Constipation

Often breastfed babies don't "go" as often because the milk is so efficient that most of it is absorbed into the body. They say a BF baby can go as long as a week without a bowel movement and it's still ok... as long as it isn't causing significant pain, it's not really a problem
