Spin-off---Weird people

So, some think it's weird to have men teaching young children.

Who thinks it's weird to have women fighting fires, fighting combat, walking the beat (classically sterotyped *male* jobs) ??

Re: Spin-off---Weird people

I agree, it is the men branching over into women's traditional roles. My dad is a nurseChat Icon but he works in the VA pysch ward.

I think it is weird when a husband and wife are both in the military and they have kids. I think it should be one parent or the other, especially in wartime.

So funny, I just read an article in the Daily News about a married couple who are both serving in Iraq.. they have a 2 year old daughter at home..

Its horrible for them actually ... they say honestly it puts MORE of a strain on their marriage than if only one of them had been deployed Chat Icon

Re: Spin-off---Weird people

I think that when women first starting moving into fields that were primarily man dominated ....it was thought of as weird.....
But society changed....

and so it will now....

BUT it is weird to see at first!

eta...i MOST people think it is weird to see or hear of a stay at home dad.....but it's is happening more and more....

because us women are conquering a once male dominated work force!!!!!!!!!

No not at all. As an educator I can tell you that many of the boys (I teach high school) who are the worst discipline problems either have no father in their lives, an absentee father or a father who lives with them but is just not present in their lives. A male teacher might be the only stable male role model in their lives.
Many of these boys are not in other activities such as sports where they might have a positive male role model of a coach or they don't have other male family members who live nearby and who they see on a regular basis.

Young children should be exposed to both genders in various professions. Even early childhood play is still so gender oriented. No wonder why the stereotypes of "men's work" and "women's work" are still around.

I don't think she was looking for a problem-just what are some jobs that are not so gender friendly.

No she didn't ask for a listing of jobs...she wanted to know who thinks it is weird to have one gender doing a particular job

Re: Spin-off---Weird people

When DH and I have kids, he's going to have a more hands-on role than I will- because of his schedule, he only has to be on campus three days a week. He will be home all day with our kids two days a week, when we have them.

It makes me glad that we'll be able to do that, even though I would love to be a SAHM. When I was a little kid my dad worked 9-5 and my mom worked nights, so I had a lot of hands on parenting from my dad; I don't think this would be the case if they both worked 9-5. I am glad that our kids will have a part-time SAHD.

Exactly i agree with this statement.

Seems like everyone is so hostile to respond to a simple question lately without using the CAPS or other EXPRESSIONS.

I don't think its wierd that women are firefighters, police women or in the military - I think its great to see that women have evolved and are taking on roles that were once known to be performed by men.

This is from the US Marine Corps. website:

What opportunities are available to women who would like to be Marine officers?

Because the U.S. Marine Corps has much to offer, the number of women officers commissioned annually has grown 164% from 1995 to 2001. Virtually all opportunities are available to women.

Re: Spin-off---Weird people

Who is eligible to be a Marine officer?

If you are a citizen of the United States and have a bachelor's degree or in the process of getting your bachelor's degree, you may be eligible for the Marine Corps officer program.

i don't think they distinguish between genders when it comes to becoming a marine. i think it's open to all who are eligible.
