How far before Halloween would you buy a pumpkin?
DH and I are trying to figure out the best time to go pumpkin picking. We're having a Halloween party on the 28th, and want to get a big pumpkin, which we will carve the day before. The closer it gets to Halloween, the worse the selection usually is. Would it be too early to go next weekend, or should we wait until just the week before, on the 21st or 22nd?

We got ours today and carved it - (I posted it on the parenting board) The lady gave us a remedy of Vinegar- lemon juice &water to "preserve" the pumpkin- she said if you brush it on the carving and the inside it makes the pumpkin stay a long time.

I got some yesterday but I usually don't carve them until a week before halloween.

This year was a bad pumpkin crop  A lot of them rotted on in the fields or are rotting from the inside now. I think it was the heavy rains we had awhile back. It's best to get yours early but really check it out for any possible bad spots.

we got ours today and all the pumpkins look fantastic! I could not believe the selection of pumpkins there were!!

Jax, you can get it early, just don't carve it until just before the party.
We went pumpkin picking yesterday out east and the crop was not so good. I wouldn't wait much longer.
