Anyone have thier masters in marriage counseling?

I was just reading up about it and it sounds sooo interesting. Would love to talk to anyone who has this and can tell me what school was like.

Re: Anyone have thier masters in marriage counseling?

I didnt know you could get a Masters in that .
I know at EMpire, we have Certified Marriage Counselors and they do not even have bachelors degrees..they are lower in "status" on our list then a CSW.

A Masters would likely get someone A LOT of work in that field....

The school right up the block offers it and once I read it I thought WOW, I would love to do that...AND I am thinking I would love to specialize in Marriage Counseling for INfertile couples.

SO DO IT!!!!!

I have recently though of going back to school for nursing( I would lose ALL my current degrees, and classes) to work in the NICU...I would have to struggle to get a position but I think if you want something bad enough it can happen....

DO IT DEB!

i was SOOO interested in doing this (i really did want to be either a marriage counselor or a sex therapist....).. but i'm one of those people that will hear something and then automatically assume i have the same issue... so that may not be the best thing for my marriageChat Icon Chat Icon

That is why I couldnt be a psychologist and had to change ( I went to school psychology program) because I was told by all my professors I was overly sympathizing with people...I wanted to cure them immediatly and seeing people hurt emotionally Makes me ill...LOL

Deb I think you would be great at something like this!

Re: Anyone have thier masters in marriage counseling?

Neenie..jsut for your information...not trying to push.
UCF is literally 5 minutes from my house (its the 3rd largest state state school in FL) They are in the process of being approved for a med school and I believe they want to have a nursing program as well.
It's all in the works of getting approved now.

if your major is liberal arts, then you probably have most of the pre-reqs already for the nursing program (i had almost all of them- just need to take anatomy & physiology 1 and 2 before i start the program).. and then its 2 years part time at Nassau for the RN. So you wouldnt really be throwing away your credits if you decided to go that route Chat Icon

You may be able to, but you may have to make up "undergraduate deficiencies." One of my good friends got a BA in English then decided that she wanted to pursue psychology (to the PhD level, which she is now nearly done with). I know she had to take a few courses in psychological statistics at SUNY Farmingdale in between finishing her BA and getting into a Master's program. I think it depends on how technical the program is. Like, someone with an English degree might have a really tough time getting into an engineering program (I would assume).

The nursing program at Suffolk is actually the most competitive on Long Island--they take about 5% of applicants (I used to work in admissions at a competing college so I know these random facts).

Re: Anyone have thier masters in marriage counseling?

I have never heard of a Masters in Marriage Counseling. I have heard of a Masters in counseling with specialization in marriage...I did an internship at Stonybrooks Marriage Counseling Center...Definately a lot harder than one would think!!!

Few things i would look into if i were you.
1. do you have to take the GRE
2. is this an APA accredited school. If not i would pass.

Yes I have to take the GRE and yes it's an APA accredited school.
Here is a little something about it:

The master’s degree prepares students to work in private practice, agencies and other settings as marriage and family therapists. Graduates of the program are expected to have a sense of professional identity, acquire requisite skills and knowledge to work with couples and families, attain licensure and become leaders in the profession.
