Block party question what to do... UPDATE

This will be the first block party for us since we just moved in (well in October). One of the neighbors (the one who helps put this thing together) mentioned to my DH that they collect 150-200 per HOUSE for the block party. For the DJ and the get things for the kids to jump in blah blah blah....

Well we don't have any kids, And the only people that will be coming are adults. None of them have kids.

When my parents have their block party they pay 25.00 for the DJ (that I could understand paying)

I think 200 is a lot of money per family. I'm not even going to use anything but the DJ (that I have no problem putting money in for)

ETA: ok so she just came around and I signed it saying it would be ok. That I would participate.

She said no less then 95.00 no more then 110.00 Still seems a little high but not 200.00

They are having a DJ waterslide and cotton candy machine. So who is stopping by! Chat Icon I want to make sure I get my money's worth

Re: Block party question what to do...

Chat Icon That is a LOT of money! The most we were ever asked for was $75 and that included DJ & jumpy thing... That's even with only 1/2 the block participating.

ETA: Are you comfortable talking to the person running the block party? I would let them know that is too much for you guys to swing... Chat Icon

Re: Block party question what to do...

my block party organizers "ask" for $50-$100 per house. Depending on whether or not we participate that year, I give anywhere between $25-$50 (we have no kids using their stuff). If I were you, I'd give something ($25?) and explain that your guests are all adults.

That is an INSANE amount of money. When I lived in Levittown my parents kicked in for the DJ too, but not $200! My mother would have told them to shove it!

Where I live now, there's a "community day" with one block closed off, and we are assigned something to bring based on our block (i.e. dessert, entree, etc.) No one should have to shell out $200!

Re: Block party question what to do...

We pay $135 every year; however, only 8 or 9 houses participate. It covers the DJ, bounce house, give aways, tips for the entertainers, dunk tank.

I agree that seems alot especially if that many people are participating. I'm assuming it's only a section of the block.

We have children so for us, it's always a good time. I agree, seems like alot especially if you don't have children.

Re: Block party question what to do...

This is one reason why my parents stopped participating in the block parties. The prices kept getting higher and fewer houses would go in on it, making it more expensive for those who wanted tho participate.

And then there was the whole issue of where the DJ was located. If he's in the middle of the block, the houses on the end don't hear them music. This bothered those families, and they refused to participate in future block parties.

And then there were the bouncy things for the kids and give-aways and what not which upped the price for the party. My niece and nephews could care less. All they wanted to do was ride their bikes and razr scooters in the street.

I always had fun at block parties, but they tend to get out of hand these days. Not everyone can keep up with the Jones, and it's not fair to everyone else on the block.

These are just my opinions. I hope I haven't offended anyone.

Re: Block party question what to do...

Well I enjoy the block party. My friends come over.. And I think since we are new to the block it would be good to stick around and meet the neighbors. BUT I don't want to pay 200.00 plus the money that I'd have to pay to have the party food and stuff.

Re: Block party question what to do...

I think $200 is a lot. I don't really get the whole concept of how they do it now. When I was a kid, they always had one, and you paid a certain price pp, for burgers, hotdogs, beer and soda. Then, we had a huge BBQ in the middle of the street and people brought salads and desserts. We rode our bikes up and down and there was a big volleyball game everyone participated in, and a boom box or stereo for music. But everyone sat together as a group in the middle somewhere. They were a really fun way to get to know your neighbors.

When I have gone recently, it is strange to me. They have the DJ and the stuff for the kids, but overall, everyone just sits in front of their own house, invites their own guests and don't really mingle. Why wouldn't I just have my own party if I am inviting my own guests, sitting at my house and eating my own food. I don't really get it.

Re: Block party question what to do...

Is there any way you can ask what exactly the $200 covers? Maybe you can tell them that for your previous block parties you used to contribute $50 and don't really understand how different this one is going to be. I vote for the "play ignorant" card and then they will have to explain what specifically they spend the money on.

I feel better I thought I was just being a scrooge.

I think if I had several kids over I'd feel better about paying the money!

I agree here. We have had block parties the past 3 years and none of them came close to 200! That really is an insane amount of money. I would ask to start sitting in on the commitees that are running the meeting so you can see where this money is really going...

Re: Block party question what to do...

We had a block party last year. If you only wanted to participate and pay for the DJ/relay races stuff you paid $75. People with kids who wanted the participate with the clown paid $110. Actually at the end they got money back....so it came to like $65 and $95 I think.

I didn't think that was too pricey since everyone on the block had stuff to do all day.

It really depended on the number of people who participated. We wound up getting 2 people who paid the day off so that wound up being the money back to people.

There are 20 houses on my block and about 14 participated.

$200 does sound a little pricey for only a DJ and jumpy thing. Our DJ cost $500 for 4 hours and we gave him a $100 tip.

Re: Block party question what to do...

Holy cow, that's a lot of money!! Chat Icon (I think ours is usually $20 or $40 or something like that.) If my neighbors wanted to collect that much, I think I just wouln't participate. Maybe you could contribute some money and then make some food, games or arts and crafts for the kids, face paint, something???
