Big ticket registry items: who do you expect to buy yours?

My mom just told me that my "aunt" (mom's best friend) was asking her if I would find it tacky if she gave me money. She, her mother, and her two daughters want to contribute and give a large check so DH and I can buy what we want for the baby. Supposedly she wants to leave items on the registry for others to buy.

I told my mom that since there are some big ticket items on there and I don't think they will all be purchased, my aunt should go ahead and get what she wants.

I know it is crazy to think this way but when you registered for your stroller, car seat, baby monitor and other items that may be over $150, did you have an idea in the back of your head of who might buy them for you?

I did. I kinda know who is more apt to buy the big stuff. Plus, I know I have some family members that will go in together and buy the bigger stuff.
According to my registry (ahem) the big stuff is mostly purchased!

Re: Big ticket registry items: who do you expect to buy yours?

I knew that my family, DH's godmother and my mom's very close friends were going to buy more expensive items.

Re: Big ticket registry items: who do you expect to buy yours?

Honestly I don't know. I know his parents will do at least one big item, and so will my mom. All of our parents are retired & on fixed income, so I am not sure how much they will really be able to afford.

DH & I also have some pretty wealthy family members on both sides, but I never know what they will do. They were super-geneous to us for the bridal shower, and not so much at the wedding, so I don't know which direction they will go there.

DH & I are buying our own furniture for the nursery.

My inlaws gave us a sum of money and it was a great move, we were able to buy things as we needed them after the baby was born. So I bought the pram with it, then I bought things like the exersaucer, stairgates, carseat...it came in really handy!

Re: Big ticket registry items: who do you expect to buy yours?

I had certain expectations and honestly, they weren't really met. I expected my sister to buy my travel system since I had bought her one for her shower, but she wound up buying something half the price. I wound up buying the stroller/carseat myself. My in-laws and DH's grandmother made it seem like they were contributing more money to the furniture then they actually did. And again, we wound up paying a lot more then we expected.
So if I learned anything, it's not to have any expectations. You're best off appreciating what you get and being prepared to purchase what you don't. Chat Icon

Re: Big ticket registry items: who do you expect to buy yours?

My mom bought all of my big ticket items. I did not register for the stroller, my mom got me the BumbleRide. the only thing she diddn't get was the swing and the high chair. Actually, I really didn't have much over $150Chat Icon Just the stroller ($350) and the car seat ($150).

ETS: The gifts received at my shower were mostly little things. We bought the furniture ourselves. MIL got us nothing.

Re: Big ticket registry items: who do you expect to buy yours?

Considering we are having twins there are several big ticket items times TWO!

I was always ridiculously generous to my cousins when their time came years ago but after my wedding I was shocked to see that they don't reciprocate at all. Four of my cousins chipped in for a $40-50 gift for my bridal shower and they are all well offChat Icon

The twin stroller is Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon ($over 400 and there are not nearly as many choices as singletons) and DH and I already assume we will have to buy it, the two cribs and most other big ticket stuff.

My MIL and FIL will probably buy one big ticket item but no one else. My family is from a different generation. It's beeen years since they bought this stuff and they have NO idea how expensive it is when you have twins and need at least 2 cribs, car seats, double strollers, high chairs, etc.

Re: Big ticket registry items: who do you expect to buy yours?

I think I am going to tell my mom to tell my aunt to buy whatever fits the amount she wants to spend. Listening to the stories of how people don't give what you gave or what you might expect, I would like to receive at least one large item at my shower.

My parents are buying the furniture and the bedding so we do have that out of the way

If you have different groups of friends (kinda like the bridal shower concept) perhaps they might like chipping in on a big ticket item.

I have three close friends from high school. My BF already mentioned that they might do this and get me one of the car seats. Maybe a set of aunts or cousins would be willing to do this.

Could you drop a hint to your mom and maybe she could spread the word?

Re: Big ticket registry items: who do you expect to buy yours?

So far I have gotten very few big ticket stuff but I still consider myself really lucky- My mom gave us money which I used to buy the crib(second hand), glider(second-hand) and the baby's bedding. So basically mom and some careful spending by me covered the nursery.

My MIL has given us anything baby specific but she is always very generous. She did give us some money to help re-carpet the bedrooms, including the baby's room so I considering this her gift. I even sent thank you card.

My Grandma gave us a check for our stroller so we are covered on that.

DH Uncle got our carseat.

But that's it- the rest of our stuff is still on the registry and I know my shower here will be small stuff since they are just friends and co-workers. My NY shower my relatives did not use the registry at all- they just got us clothes.

BUT my DH company gave us gift cards for $300- that will get us our monitor(I really want the video one) and some other expensive stuff.

We have been really lucky and fortunate.

Re: Big ticket registry items: who do you expect to buy yours?

my mother bought my stroller, well I bought it and put her on a payment plan...she wants to hide the price from my father.

fil bought the carseat...intentions were good, except he called a few weeks later to borrow money.

I think my aunt is buying the crib.

My brother and his girlfriend bought me everything I could ever need to breastfeed. They are healthy vegans and glad that I am going to try to BF. They also got me the i-sight camera, they are moving to france and want to see the baby.

I'm not expecting anyone to buy anything big- what I get is what I get. Of course, I am hoping to get a lot of the big-ticket things, but if DH and I have to get them ourselves, then that's what we'll do. My in-laws have already been incredibly generous and I know my parents will be very generous, and anything else is just icing on the cake.

Re: Big ticket registry items: who do you expect to buy yours?

My parents contributed $$$ towards the crib. My sister bought one of the big ticket items, SIL bought another one, a few friends went in on our big stroller. We got lots of GC's from everyone else.

We were actually extremely fortunate. We did purchase the baby's furniture but practically everything on our registry was purchased for us. We recieved all the big items, bedding, a majority of the not so big stuff and some clothing. We just have a few odds and ends to buy and some more clothes. Everyone was extremely generous. I was actually surprised b/c I didn't think people would spend as much as they did.

So I say the less expectations you have the more they will be exceeded!!

Re: Big ticket registry items: who do you expect to buy yours?

I don't see the difference of you getting the big ticket item verse the money.

I always prefer getting gift certificates or money... this way I can do the shopping Chat Icon Especially when it's not your money.

Don't suggest for her to buy something if she wants to give you money. The whole concept of registries is often hard for people especially our parents generation.

I honestly thought that people would chip in and get those gifts. A lot of people just bought those on their own and I was very surprised - everyone was so generous!!! Chat Icon

I don't expect anyone to buy us the furniture we are going to get. We don't really need anything except a crib really and we can just get that ourselves.

But my family is usually pretty generous when it comes to gifts. I was so surprised at the things we got for our wedding shower. DH's mom will just buy us clothes, but my SMIL will contribute a lot (besides the fact that she is our childcare, she is a life saver!) Plus there hasn't been a baby in my family for almost 10 years, so people have already started to buy things for usChat Icon

Re: Big ticket registry items: who do you expect to buy yours?

We bought our own furniture because we didn't expect our families to shell out that kind of money considering DH's family has 6 other grandchildren. My parents bought us the stroller, my sister bought us the bedding and his family bought us the high chair and the swing and bounce. We assumed that our families would take care of those items seeing as they were all under $300.

I don't think it is that she doesn't want to buy us a gift. She is quite comfortable with registries and used one for our bridal registry. Her issue is that she doesn't want to take things away from other people buying them ( you know how annoying it can be when you want to get something off the registry and all of the decent stuff is taken already). I just want her to know that I really don't expect that many of the big items will be purchased so she can buy what she wants.

Re: Big ticket registry items: who do you expect to buy yours?

I'm having the first grandchild on my side AND the first great-grandchild, so I'm pretty sure my parents and grandmother are going to go nuts.

DH and I both have worked for the same company for 8 years, so I'm thinking the work shower will get us some big ticket things too (from the group).
