Work intentions after maternity leave - UPDATE

Okay, I would like honest opinions. I'm terrible at saying how I feel and get all nervous, dizzy, etc. I work in a small office - I've been here for about 6 years...very nice employers. Now here is the thing, I plan on changing my work schedule and would like to propose it to them and let them think it over and decide what is best for us. I am sooooooooooooo nervous to go in there, is it REALLY tacky if I email the 1 of the partners my intentions and tell him to think it over, then we can discuss it? Or should I grow up and go in face to face? I get ill thinking about it! Chat Icon

Re: Work intentions after maternity leave

I would not email anything, that allows your boss to ignore it for as long as he wants. You should schedule a meeting with him to talk about maternity leave and what your hope for after you come back to work. That is what i did and it worked out good. He might need a few days to think about it so don't worry too much about that.

Be careful though, if you work in an office of less then 50 you are not covered by FMLA leave and your boss can get rid of your position if he wants to.

They actually did this to one girl here last year. They mailed her a letter terminating her employment while she was on leave. They wouldn't do that to me, that I know. When I had my miscarriage they didn't dock me any pay and let me stay home for 2 1/2 weeks to wait to miscarry. They always tell me I better come back and stay here forever. They worked something out with another girl, who is currently on leave right now. She changed her schedule and is now doing the same thing for her second baby as we speak. I really have to grow a set and just go in there! I'm sooooooooo nervous. I feel so sick to my stomach right now. Maybe if I just send the email saying "let me know when you have a minute to talk about my maternity leave, etc." then I'll have no choice. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I have to do the same thing soon. I'm nervous, but I think I'm going to just do it. I've already spoken with my supervisor and now I'm left with the head of HR. Thankfully they're not TOO difficult to talk with and I think you're better off bringning it up to them and asking them for what you want. They'll appreciate that you're being up front with them and honest. It will show you care about the company and your future there.

Thanks. They are nice and easy to talk to - I am just a nervous nelly in all these type situations. He is in a meeting right now, so I'm sure he'll call me in as soon as he gets out. Chat Icon

Re: Work intentions after maternity leave

Thanks! I went in for my review last year with intentions to say one thing and came out saying the opposite and was so mad at myself. It's as if someone takes my brain out of my head when I go in there, lol.

Re: Work intentions after maternity leave

I had a meeting with my bosses and recently sent an email with an attachment with the bullet points. I can email it to you if you wish.

I'm not really getting anything as far as maternity pay but they did promise to hold my job along with some other things that were very important to me to have in writing.

Re: Work intentions after maternity leave

I would definately put it in writing. I would email it and if you don't hear anything for a few days, then I would go in face to face.

I have learned to get EVERYTHING in writing.

Good Luck, I'm sure you'll be fine! Chat Icon

Re: Work intentions after maternity leave

Take my advice, when u do talk to them, FOLLOW YOUR CONVO UP IN WRITING!! to sum up the agreement so they can say they didn't agree to that when u want to return.

My job just screwed me cause i didn't get everything in writing!!

Re: Work intentions after maternity leave - UPDATE

I'm back from talking with him and a little confused...So I said as of right now, this is my schedule, I have child care for mon to wed., can work from home Thursdays for a total of 31 hours thing...and he wrote it all down. And I said I'd like to take the 12 weeks and he said they don't offer that here, under their policy but they WOULD hold my position because they love me here and want me to continue to work here. Then he said that at my level, even if I were to make up all the hours, that they would physically need someone here every day full-time. I said, okayyyyyyyyy, then I mentioned coming in some Sundays and he wrote that down. He said he'll discuss it with the other partners. Then he asked if I thought about day care for the other 2 days and I said, yes, and we don't want to go that route if we don't have to for emotional and financial reasons. Then he said for me to think of any other options I can think of and he'll talk to the other partners and we'll see what we can work out. I feel like now that they know we are buying a house they are going to have the upper hand here. I'm NOT happy with the outcome. What if they offer me more money, to use day care those 2 days - I want the time with the baby.Chat Icon

I would weigh out my options here and that would be a determining factor. But dont give up hope until he confronts you.

Thanks. I don't have many options since we are in contract to buy a house :(. We can't afford it on DH's salary.

Then you tell them just that. You can tell them how generous their offer is, but your time with your new baby is priceless.

Have you asked to see what their policy is since he mentioned it? Should be in writing somewhere, no?

We are under 50 employees - so they really dont' have to even hold my job for 4 weeks if they wanted - which is what they did to one girl here. I'm starting to really regret buying a house and almost want to back out of it, even though contracts are signed. Chat Icon

In your other post, you mention that it isn't their policy to hold the position. So, what is their policy?

What type of work do you do? Is the job really this worth it?

Re: Work intentions after maternity leave - UPDATE

Our handbook says we are not covered under the FMLA. So they have no obligations. Any time I'm taking off is unpaid, which I'm okay with.

I'm an accountant/financial analyst. The job is only worth it because very soon we are going to have a mortgage. If we didn't - I would absolutely be happy with any response they had. We cannot afford the mortgage with just DH's salary - impossible. Is it too late to back out when we are about to go into contract any day now?

Re: Work intentions after maternity leave - UPDATE

I never went for the CPA. Just got a business degree. I had intentions of becoming a CFA but didn't follow through with that either Chat Icon . I worked my way up in this company. We do forensic work. I guess I'll have to just see what they come back to me with. I hope I didn't make a mistake of buying a house.
