Re: who is going to eat meat today???
I probrably won't. Not because it's Lent (I'm Catholic), but because I think I'll be in the mood for some seafood this evening.

Re: who is going to eat meat today???
I think Cardinal Egan approved it. It doesn't affect me at all, since I don't eat meat, but I think it's pretty stupid. If it's St Joseph's day they don't do the same thing, so to me the saint celebration thing doesn't really hold. It seems more like a social/political kind of thing. We don't want to flare up all those irish tempers!!

Re: who is going to eat meat today???
I heard that they said if you take the dispensation you shoudl do penance. Not sure if that was true but it is what DH heard.
I made my corned beef last night - yummy. But there are leftovers in the fridge calling out to me - but I think I will skip it and and save for tomorrow. I took out fish for dinner tonight.

My corned beef will be boiling by 5.

Us too! (Although I am not a huge fan of corned beef and cabbage, we didn't make it last years, so we are having it this year . . . .)

is part of celebrating St. Joseph's day eating meat? If so, I have never heard of itso its a rediculous argument.
As for your comment "We don't want to flare up all those irish tempers!!" From someone who claims to be PC and non stereotypical, this sure was an ignorant comment.

It's a JOKE...I'm Irish!
No, eating meat is not part of St. Joseph's Day, but eating cornedbeef and cabbage is a cultural, not religious observance, so I don't think there needs to be an exception. That's JMO

I heard that they said if you take the dispensation you shoudl do penance. Not sure if that was true but it is what DH heard.
This is true - this is from Newsday last week:
"For those who choose to take advantage of the dispensation, they are asked to perform another act of penance in lieu of abstaining from meat," said Sean Dolan, a spokesman for Bishop William Murphy of the Diocese of Rockville Centre.

Well *I* didn't find it funny...as the person who is always acting offended on this site YOU should understand that.
I am excused because I am pregnant, that is physical and not religious...should that not be an exception too?

Re: who is going to eat meat today???
Not me, making manicotti tonight. DH refuses to eat meat today still even with the catholic "exception" but of course it wasnt done for nothing you have to give something back to the catholic church I heard, me well I dont always practice my religion so I would have but he refuses so I wont either. No biggie anyway we can have corned beef and cabbage anytime.

Fish and chips are a good alternative to corned beef. We had the best fish and chips when we were in Ireland.

Nope.
I don't believe the Pope gave the okay to eat meat. What I heard was that a few Deacons and Priests in the NY area said it was okay to eat corned beef and cabbage today. Even if the Pope did give the okay (which I doubt, but please correct me if I'm wrong) I still wouldn't. Makes no sense to me that all of a sudden after hundreds of years of Catholicism it's suddenly okay to eat corned beef just because it's St. Patty's Day on a Lenten Friday. Right and I heard you have to give something back dont remember what it was though, if you choose to eat meat today BUT then as we were all discussing last sat at a family function- who is making these rules? Now all of a sudden the catholic church can change the rules from 100's of years ago? Its a bit eary!

Of course being pregnant you shouldn;t be fasting...but that's different than not wanting to give up your corned beef and cabbage.
Isn't it interesting that several other people have also said they don't think the church should change the rules and yet you're jumping all over me?

Yes, but those people didn't make sweeping generalizations in their responses either.

Re: who is going to eat meat today???
I'm spanish, but my bf's mother is Irish and every year we go there to eat corned beef and cabbage and potatoes, and soda bread. My mouth is watering right now. BUT no other meat for me today or tomorrow.
I absolutely love the fact that I'm Ecuadorian and Anthony is Irish/Italian because I get to learn, embrace, and appreciate so many cultures.

Me, too.
Does anyone know how the day is celebrated in Ireland? I read that it's a religious feast day - but is there a dispensation there, too?
