Re: Need honest opinions on this salary..
When you say "1/2 from home" did you mean 1/2 hour from home or you'll be working half-time from your house?

Re: Need honest opinions on this salary..
1/2 hour commute from home.
I don't know, sometimes I hear other peoples salaries and I get down on myself, they have a lunch hour and time off (as far as holidays) I have a college degree in business I just sometimes think I can do better than this than I think when I have a baby how will I live without this pay?
I have this job now - I have been with this Co. for 12 years !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then no, I don't think it's that great a salary. It's a good starting salary but to have a degree and be someplace for 12 years... I'd start looking elsewhere.

I agree...With 12 years experience and no health benefits, that isn't great. Health benefits adds a lot to what a salary is worth. But it is hard to find jobs on the island...

Re: Need honest opinions on this salary..
Without an hour lunch and no health insurance, I would say it is a little on the low side. I have heard that the health insurance costs may be worth about $10k a year.

Re: Need honest opinions on this salary..
Go to salary.com - it'll ask you questions about your job, etc and then give you comparative salaries for people doing the same or a similar job as you - both across the country and locally. We can only really guess that this salary is good or bad but this'll give you actual data to see if it's as good or bad as you think when compared to other companies.

Re: Need honest opinions on this salary..
Negotiate the lunch. use the fact that you dont need benefits and try to get at least 30 min lunch each day (paid)!

Re: Need honest opinions on this salary..
Hey !! Why did everyone's opionion change when I wrote that I have been here 12 years !!!! (I actually left for 2 to work elsewhere)
I can't say the pay is bad for 12 years b/c I was 18 when I started, of course it wouldn't be so high.
I take the job for granted some days than others I say how lucky I am to have one with decent pay.
No health benefits was up to me - we added them into the salary, I am under my husbands job plan.

Re: Need honest opinions on this salary..
If you do find a new job... just make sure you let MrsERod know so she can send her resume out.
Or hell... let me know and i'll send my wife over there.
But wait... if I do that... then I lose my wife's free cablevision. Screw THAT!

Well, I've looked a lot at jobs on Long Island, and if you can live on that money it is nice to have that commute, which is relatively short. But the no lunch is crazy! They shouldn't be allowed to do that... I have a Master's in HR but I forget the specifics of the laws, but I know they must allow you time to eat.
ETA: I know I make less at my job than I could elsewhere, but I chose to work for the state because of the benefits and stability, so I wouldn't choose purely based on salary, but your benefits aren't so great that I would stick with it because of them. More importantly, how are your boss and co-workers? As I have learned they can make or break a job!

The fact that you have been in a field for 12 years and have a degree does change things. You have a great deal of experience and will need little to no training. Initially I thought you were talking about a starting salary.
I still don't think the salary is too bad, but its not that great either. I could not deal with the lunch thing. Although I end up eating at my desk a lot, I would not want that to be mandatory.
