Re: Do you have separate bank accounts?

This is always a hot topic on here.

We have one joint account for joint bills and each have our own checking and savings.

When we need to make a big purchase, (like this weekend, we got the driveway paved) we each take an equal amount out of our savings to transfer to the joint checking.

I feel that gives each of us freedom to spend our money as we choose, but enough to make sure we are paying our bills.

I don't believe all money becomes joint money when you get married and I don't believe either one of us should have to pay off the other's debts.

Works for us.

Re: Do you have separate bank accounts?

right now we do, but we just got married 3 months ago. Once we get a house, we will consolidate into 1 account to make bill paying easier

Re: Do you have separate bank accounts?

this is a sore subject for me. i'm for what's mine is yours and vice versa. DH is not. he will help me pay off debt if i ASK him for money but he wants to keep control of his own money. so no, we don't share money and we have separate accounts.

When it comes time to buy a house, and they ask for 1 years worth of bank statements, that's where it counts.

We have joint accounts. Once we got married we each acquired each other's debts, as we did assets.

We had our money separate before we were married, but now we have joint accounts. To tell you the truth, we don't fight over money as much as we used to when it was separate.

We do not fight over money AT ALL now that we have a joint account. We know our pay goes in there, and the bills are paid automatically, and on time.

I don't think it matters as a whole who has a seperate acct and who has only joint accts.

Whatever works...works. There is no right or wrong answer here...

Re: Do you have separate bank accounts?

All of our accounts are joint, when we started saving for our wedding we added eachother to the accounts. After the wedding we will have to choose 1 bank

One account. DH does not like to be involved in the Finances so it works better that way.

Re: Do you have separate bank accounts?

Joint only. We went "joint" when we moved in together over a year ago, that was even before we got engaged. Basically, what is mine is his and his mine, there is no division anymore.

We just presented them with all of our statements both joint and seperate. It wasn't a problem at all.

I'm not really sure why what others choose to do with their money seems to bother some people. You do what works for you as an individual couple.

Re: Do you have separate bank accounts?

We have a few accounts!

We have a joint ING account
Joint checking for our bills
And Joint savings...
but then we each have our own checking that is tied to our debit cards. When we get paid my check is direct deposited into my checking, then I Xfer 80% over to our joint and keep the 20% for spending. He does the same.
ETA: All the accounts except ING are the same bank and liked with onlie banking so it is easy to xfer the money back & forth. And we have no trouble buying our house this way!

For those who said yes, any reason why?

Most of our money goes into the joint accounts. I have some of my paycheck go to my individual account as a slush fund for my misc. expenditures. DH has the same. It is a very small percentage of overall income.

We share our accounts, and I dont see the need for an individual account, either way DH and I discuss major purchases because it is "our money"

The only account that doesnt have my name on it, is a business account that DH has.

We have personal checking accounts.
We have a joint checking and a joint ING savings account.
I also have a personal ING account.

I like having my own account. I've had it since I've had my first job. I can't bear to part with it. Even if I just had $100 in it.
I also like to feel like I'm buying him a gift, rather than he is buying his own gift. Does that make sense?

Yes my fair date twin! It does make sense!

I have my own accounts and investments.

He has his.

We have ours together.

It has nothing to do with trust. We divide bills equally and if one month, one of us needs more, we simply ask each other. I would also like to be able to buy him things without him checking the account and asking questions.

I guarantee that many of our mothers had accounts (or money stashed away) that our fathers didnt know about. Mine did. She called it her "bindle." She had a very long and happy marriage - 49 years. I doubt my father felt betrayed.

Sometimes people put things in one person's name or in trust in their childrens' names for investment or tax purposes. For some it is a smart practical move and frankly its nobody elses business.

3 accounts. I have my account which I pay my bills from. He has his account which is he pays his bills from.
The third account from our wedding money or anytime we get money that is "ours", or savings. I like having my own account.
