Legal question - I just accepted a new job offer (woo-hoo), and sent resignation letter to my company....
HR told me I need to re-issue the resignation letter to reflect "where I am going". Is this legal? Why do I have to tell my company anything about the new company I am going to??
Help please!
Update: check out the snotty response at the bottom from HR...

legally you don't have to tell them anything. how do they know you are not just quitting and being a SAHW or going back to school or something????? there is no reason for them to have that info, IMO!

Why do they need that information? What if you weren't going anywhere and just resigning?
The HR people on here probably know more, but that doesn't seem necessary to me.

No you do not have to tell them where you are going. The only time this is an issue is if you signed a non-compete.

How about changing it to " I am going to be exploring new horizons"- that will tell them where you are going- without telling them a word.

Exactly what I was going to say... Do you have a contract w/your company now? There might be a competitor's clause in there....
ETA: CONGRATS Alicia...does it mean we won't be neighbors anymore?

well, here's the catch - in the email (in which i attached the resignation letter), I said that I loved my time here and the only reason I am leaving is for salary reasons....i guess that was dumb, but what do i say now?

The letter you issued wasn't even warranted. You don't have to give a letter of resignation at all let alone tell them where you;re going. It sounds like they are looking for market data from your new job.
Tell them you won't re-issue. The letter stands.

It's okay what you wrote...
I wouldn't change anything, and you do not have to tell them where you're going.

Yes. Say that you've given them enough information & you aren't interested in a counteroffer.
(also in HR )

I'll be at 59th and Lex at the new job for awhile (until we move into a new building), so we'll still be neighbors, just a little further away....

Re: Legal question - I just accepted a new job offer (woo-hoo), and sent resignation letter to my company....
check out this SNOTTY response I just got!!
because our practice is to ask every one to state where they are going (ie making a life change or taking another job.) If you don't want to state the company specifically, could you please say something like---you are taking a job in another industry, another company, just so that your letter reflects you are leaving of your own accord. Also, if we have the name of your new company. we can locate you after you leave if necessary...but don't worry about that now, if you prefer not!

hmmm, I guess just say that you got a job with a different company, no other info.
I would not even give them that info, but that is cause I am a B!TCH
