Japanese Hair Straightening Official Thread

I feel like someone should write the rules out for us... like that day, and for the next few days also. What to do, what not to do, suggestions, tips. etc.

I'm sure some of these lovely ladies would be happy to (Please!)Chat Icon Chat Icon

I thought I'd start since you posted this so that can everyone can contribute, post pictures, and their tips.

I had it done last July and my hair still looks awesome. I thought it was one of the best things where I spent my money because it saved me so much time plus I never had a bad hair day. I wanted it to have done again but I'm pregnant right now and I don't think it might be a good idea but if I wasn't, I'll definitely do it now. As soon as the baby is born, I will probably have it done again.
I went to a place in Bayside recommended by one of my friends and they did a very good job. I will probably try Top Point next time because it's cheaper from what I paid ($350) and I've seen great pictures from everyone here.
Tips that they told me after I had it done:

You cannot wash your hair for 3 days.

You should not put your hair behind your ears on those first few weeks after you have it done.

You should not put your hair in a ponytail on those first few weeks after you have it done.

You should not put any hair accessories on those first few weeks after you have it done.

At least to wait a month if you dye your hair before you have it done or vice versa.

If I think of anything else, I will post.

If possible, maybe everyone that had it done can post their links here or post them their experiences and their pictures. Chat Icon

I just wanted to add that I go to a place near my house (Brooklyn) and I get charged $100-$200 depending on how long my hair is.

Re: Japanese Hair Straightening Official Thread

My before and After pics

After 1st wash & air-dry pictures

They told me:
do not wash for 3 days and
do not put behind your ears or in a ponytail or in a clip for 3 days

I sleep on my side, so I just tried to lay my hair out on the pillow so it wasn't under my head when I slept (just for the first 3 days)

after the 1st wash I was amazed at how straight it was!

Jessica gave me the directions to Top Point and they were perfect! I was a little nervous about driving into Flushing by myself because I am not familiar with the area and I heard the traffic is horrendous!
me less than an hour to get there - 9:30am. The Municipal Parking lot was pretty much empty at that hour so there was no problem finding a spot. You have to pay the meter in Quarters and have to go back out every 3 hours to pay the meter. I used a whole roll of quarters ($10) for parking because I was there for 7 hours. Make sure you get there early if you go on a Saturday because when I went out at 12:30 to pay the meter the parking lot was full and peole were lined up waiting for spots!
I used Janice at Top Point. I never got it done before, but for my first time I thought she was great. She told me the price range was $200 (for short hair) to $250 (for long hair), and I was somewhere in the middle - I forgot I think I paid $230?
The product line they used was Liscio products at Top Point salon. I didn't know this before I went there, but while I was there I saw the bottle so I decided to look it up.
Milbon Liscio website
If you enter Profession, you can see the products. They used Liscio High Solution
(H) Set - For Virgin Hair on me.

here is a picture of me from Pompeii after being in the rain and drizzle all day! This was about 3 weeks after getting it done and I let it airdry that morning.

Can you get this done if you hair is not really curly? My hair is very thick and I have to blow dry it every day (with a straightening iron). If i do this it looks straight (but on a humid day forget about it). If i don't it dries with like two waves in it and is gross. I would love to be able to take a shower and air dry (especially after my kids are here).

Also, i highlight my hair now but will probably be going back to my natural color after the kids are here. Can you do this if you highlight your hair or dye it? Is that too many chemicals in your hair??

Thanks for any advice.

Yes you can. It will make your hair more manageable, frizz-free and beautiful.
I think you just have to wait a certain amount of time if you highlight it before you can get it done.

I think it makes your hair nicer every time you have it done.

Great idea to start this thread!

I got mine done in March (link to my experience at Hair Village ) and it still looks great. I am so happy I got this done. The time I save alone was well worth the $190. The added bonuses are no frizz, wash and go (with straight hair!), and your hair looks longer.

My mom is hair stylist and has been for over 30 years. She inspected my hair a couple of months after I got it done and she said there was no damage - that my hair looked completely healthy.

When you first get it done it is really really pin straight. After the first few washes you get a little body back. And my regular stylist said the same thing.

My roots are starting to grow in now and they are wavy/curly, but barely noticeable even when I air dry. When I feel like it, I blow dry the roots only so they are straighter. My hair seems to be growing faster since getting the JHS. I don't know if that's really true, but it seems that way to me.

My hair was dyed before I got it done but my roots needed to be done. I called them and ask if it was okay to get it done with dyed hair. They said I had to wait 3 weeks. I waited 5 just to be safe.

I wouldn't recommend getting highlights after getting JHS. Based on what my mom and my stylist both said, it could damage your hair to double process it like that.

I do have a question for the girls that have gotten it done more than once:

When you go back - do they just touch up your roots or do they put solution on all your hair again and straighten it with the iron all over again?

I agree- here are pics of my most recent time- I let me hair air dry and sleep on it- and then touch it up with a flat iron ( that is the only way I know how to style my hair)

I'm still dying to get it done... not sure if it's ok to do when one breastfeeds. Chat Icon

But one question, is there a time when one shouldn't get it done? For example, like in the summer... wouldn't the humidity go against the process?

the chemicals don't touch your scalp- so they don't get into to you

nope- any time of year is fine- I went on May 4th- it was an 80 degree day- made no difference
