What town are you in. I'm having the same problem yet everyone else seems to have 6' fence right up to the property line regardless of being a corner lot. I'm in Town of Huntington.
A lot of people by us do that too (Town of Hempstead) and we were told by multiple fence companies that we can do it too, but if the town goes around and sees it and finds out you didn't get a permit they can demand that you take it down and then you have to go through all the hassle of getting the permit and then you can install your fence again.
I know in Brookhaven, you can ask for a variance, but it's a PITA and you know how quickly things get approved over at Town Hall!

There is a corner house by me that has the picket fence. I like that look for a corner.

Oh, I know, and we figured that once you pizzed them off by trying to go around the rules the application would be "accidently" lost, put to the bottom of the pile, whatever. Not worth the aggrivation.
