Red, Josie, Flee, and other past Italy travelers!- BACK!!!! (UPDATED pg 2)
I leave tomorrow for Rome, Florence, and Venice.
The only place I've already been is Rome.
Anyone have any MUST sees in Florence/Venice? Or something SUPER COOL that you came across while there, maybe by accident?!
TIA - I'm starting to get excited

Venice is pretty simple. St. Marks, Bridge of sighs, you can go see the Murano glass factory.

I've read that Murano is fabulous, but that I shouldn't expect to buy anything there 'cause it's crazy expensive.
Florence is supposed to have fabulous jewelry, right? I need a NICE present to bring home to FH.

Rome...I am assuming you know all the sites to see there BUT You must do a tour of the sites at night...SOOOO BEAUTIFUL! And such a different experience than seeing them during the day
Florence...Go see the Academy of fine Arts if you havea chance

YES the murano glass is EXPENSIVE BUT i wish i did buy something there! And do not get the cheesy knock offs in teh stores! Not buying something small is a regret i have!
Rome: go to Varona. Cute ittle town we walked to
YES FLorence is known for the jewlery shops. I wasn't all that impressed by it.
OH and go to the square in FLorence to see Giottos Bell Tower!
AND DO NOT FORGET TO EAT A GELATTO~ they are heavenly

Re: Red, Josie, Flee, and other past Italy travelers!
good tips!! Thanks!!!
I wouldn't have thought to do a night tour of Rome.
We leave NY at 5something, but arrive in Rome at 8:30am, and our day starts right away. I wonder if the jet lag will be rough?
eta: 5:20pm Tuesday, arrive 8:30am WED

Hi!!!
Unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to visit Rome, Florence, or Venice when I last went... I really went to visit relatives in Naples and I toured areas around there like Capri, Casserta, Amalfi coast and of course my mothers and fathers towns (pretty much all farmland..haha)..but, if you have any interests on the above places, let me know and I can fill you in.
Have a great time!!!

Thanks Jenn
I'm getting excited, but I am not packed!!!
My mother and sister packed "dressy" - not casual at all.
My whole LIFE is casual!

I did the same thing as you, 5 years ago!!!
It was absolutely beautiful over there - I hope to get back to that region eventually. We stayed in Rocella Ionica (Calabria), and it was just too perfect.
City tours this time!

I forgot to mention my little tips:
ETA: The flee markets have some great deals on SHOES and JEWELERY.. Their cheaper priced (flee market) shoes are NICER than any kind of cheap shoe here..like in payless, etc..IMO
DEF. eat gelato..my favorite flavors are hazelnut (nocolla sp?)and stratatella(sp?)
Def. go somewhere and eat their pizza..so good!!!!!

Re: Red, Josie, Flee, and other past Italy travelers!
well i would DEFINITELY pack more casual than dressy! If you are going to be walking around you want to be as COMFORTABLE as possible. ESPECIALLY once you see the lines to get into some of the popular sites! Just bring a few nicer outfits for some restaurants for dinner! If you are planning on going to the Vatican GO EARLY!

Re: Red, Josie, Flee, and other past Italy travelers!
OH gosh, I feel like my memory has faded soo much since its been probably 5-6 years since I was in Italy and I'm so not good at recalling specifics.. I will call one of my g'friends who went with me, we're all old married ladies now so lets see what we remember
But Red already gave you some great recommendations (I NEVER did a night tour of Rome , that sounds pretty fantastic! )
I looooved Venice, I know a lot of peole cannot stand it but to me its just such a wonderfully unique city. Of COURSE take a overpriced gonodola ride and just generally walk around the city to get a 'feel for it' ... I can remember my girlfrineds and I got TOTALLY lost but at the same time we had so much fun discovering things.. just take it ALL in, Venice is like no other city in the world! (IMO)
I remmber feeling very rushed in Florence, it was the way our itinerary was laid out - which is unfortunate because Florence is a very interesting city , so rich with culture and art. I am emailing my friend (who has a much better memory that I do ) and she said the "Must see's" for Florence are Il Duomo, the Academia (statue of David) and the Uffizi ... there is a LOT to see in Florence but I do recall everythign being within close enough proximity .. just take good walking shoes because you will be walking a LOT
And DO NOT leave Italy without MULTIPLE GELOTOS (I also loved their pannins, so much 'fresher' than here in the States)
I wish I could remember even one place we ate, unfortunately I cannot or else I'd recommend the restuarant in Flornece & Venice, which was truly wonderful
I honestly did not buy ANY jewlery in Italy (then again I was single and looking to party it up, not really spend a lot of $$) but I can remember thinking Florence was very overpriced. BUT if you know your stuff, look around - or ask your tour guide, they can often give you reputable recommendations
As for jetlag - as Red said I was screwed up for DAYS coming home (we flew from NY-Milan and then toured and flew home Rome -NY .. Rome-NY is a longer flight ) We also did a tour and when we got off the plane in Milan we immediately started sightseeing and I felt FINE (even though I did NOT sleep a wink on the overnight flight) . I believed we made it an early night but got in some shopping and was fine the rest of the trip - you will adjust rather quickly
Most importantly just HAVE FUN and embrace the Country, its one of the most fantastic trips I've ever taken (next to Greece )

Re: Red, Josie, Flee, and other past Italy travelers!
wow!! Thanks guys - I'm really getting excited now
We don't have a tour guide - Dad created his own itinerary. It's very detailed, down to places he wants to eat!
This has been declared our "last family vacation" (a little sad - we've had so many! my lil bro is only 14), but I have a feeling it'll be a good one!

Ahh Ok , I thought you were doing an organized tour
The flee markets are also a great suggestion, I"m wracking my brain to recall where we went to one.. I think it was Flornece, I do not recall... and can you believe I actually ran into people I KNEW In the middle of the flee market in italy (former co-workers, too funny)
Funny enough there were some foods I thought I would love that I didnt love .. I didnt like the pizzz either .. BUT I loved their pastas and the fact that everythign was just SO much 'fresher" .. its amazing how processed everything we eat is here as opposed to there

Ok..I guess I'm the odd ball when it comes to the pizza, but I have a thing for thin crusted pizza and raw tomato sauce (kind of what it's like IMO)..
