5 month feeding schedule and fruit/veggie questions

DS is not really on a feeding schedule and I've been trying to get him on one because he likes to eat 3-4 oz bottles very often throughout the day instead of bigger bottles fewer times a day.

He's been eating 1tbs cereal mixed with 1 oz of formula twice a day for 2 weeks now and we are ready to start fruit and veggies. So I guess my questions are:

1. Do you still feed cereal while trying fruits and veggies?
2. How many times a day do you feed the solids and how much at each time?
3. Do you have trouble getting your DC to eat as much as they should?
4. How do the bottles fit in around the solids.

I am just so confused.

DS will be 5 months old this week and weighs 17+ lbs and is 26" tall (he's a big boy!).

Thanks so much!

I know it's so confusing at first! Chat Icon

1. Yes, still give cereal with the fruits and veggies. We started trying one of the small jars (Stage 1) followed by 2 TBSP. of cereal - some people mix them but we didn't.

2. I would say 2x/day is sufficient at 5 months old (DD is still at 2x at 7 mos.). We do a fruit+cereal at breakfast and veggie+cereal at lunch.

3. We do not have trouble, but others certainly do! Some babies take to solids better than others but don't worry so much at this point and just make it an enjoyable experience for you and your DC.

4. We started giving the bottles RIGHT after the solids and that didn't work since DD was too full. Currently we do bottle, solids, bottle, solids, bottle with a couple of hours in between each one.

Good luck!! Chat Icon

Re: 5 month feeding schedule and fruit/veggie questions

My daughter is also 5 months as of yesterday. She is also a big baby- 18 pounds. Here is her schedule:

8 ounce bottle at 7:30
9:30 I give her oatmeal(1 tsp) with half a jar of fruit.
12:00 she eats a jar of veggies.
2:00 she gets another 8 ounce bottle.
4:00 she gets her cereal again(sometimes she skips this and I don't push it).
6:30 she gets her last 8 ounce bottle.
Occasionally she will have a bottle later if she is ansy and won't go down to sleep. Most of the time the 6:30 bottle is enough for her to sleep through the night.
My daughter has no problems eating and loves the solid foods. I alternate foods now that she has tried everything. She has more variety now. I started her on cereals at 4 months.

My DS is a snacker too - he wants to eat every 2 hours...LOL

I still kept cereal up while introducing veggies and fruits. I have big boys - so they both started right out with the stage 2

I mix my cereal with water though - since DS is on the bigger side.

Re: 5 month feeding schedule and fruit/veggie questions

I'm so glad you ladies posted this! My DS will be 5 months on the 22nd and he is also a big boy...19.5lbs. and 27 inches!Chat Icon I'm trying to eliminate the big bottles little by little and I currently give him cereal and oatmeal 2x a day (morning rice cereal and evening oatmeal). Each cereal/oatmeal feeding (2 tblsp. mixed with 5 tblsp. of formula) is followed by a 3 oz. bottle. I won't start fruits and veggies until he is 5 months. So this is what our schedule looks like.

5-6 am - 7 oz. bottle
10-11am - cereal followed by 3 oz. bottle
2-3pm - 7-8 oz bottle
6-7pm - cereal followed by a 3 oz. bottle
8-9pm - 5 oz bottle before bed time

He wakes up occassionally throughout the night and so I give him a 6-7 oz. bottle then.

He is getting so heavy I'm having a hard time carrying him for along periods of timeChat Icon He outgrew his infant car seat and is on his way out of the baby swing...my baby is growing up so fast!

Re: 5 month feeding schedule and fruit/veggie questions

1. Do you still feed cereal while trying fruits and veggies?

yes, i mix them (or put them side by side in the bowl), 2 tablespoons of cereal and about 1-2 tablespoons of fruit or veggie

2. How many times a day do you feed the solids and how much at each time?

2x per day I'd say 3 tablespoons (2 cereal 1 fruit or veggie...fruit in the morn. veggie at night)

3. Do you have trouble getting your DC to eat as much as they should?

no DS loves to eat!

4. How do the bottles fit in around the solids.
I do solids 1/2 hr before the bottle 7:30 am and 7:30 pm. Sometimes he takes less at that bottle but most times he finishes it.
