Yeah I can't even anymore. And sad thing is, the gun zealots still can't see a need for reform despite cases like these. If they'd just back down and say "Wow, something isn't right" I'd have more respect for them....

Re: 5-year-old boy shoots 2-year-old sister
My heart breaks for that whole family. This 5 yr old boy will never recover knowing what he did. I know the kind of kid my son is. He would be broken. Those parents are given 2 children to protect and keep safe. Shame on them.

5-year-old boy shoots 2-year-old sister
Being a parent is REALLY hard. REALLY HARD. There are horrible things that can happen every single day! And so, we try to make our jobs a little easier, a little safer. . . we put up gates, we put locks on cabinets, we put fences around our pools and we KEEP GUNS OUT OF THEIR HANDS. Why make your job harder with free access to a GUN. I have no words.

Re: 5-year-old boy shoots 2-year-old sister
I want to look at this from a different angle.
People who give their children guns have frown up with guns. They have guns in their house. They hunt. They go to the range. Its a way of life.
We may not connect in that way, or like it. But there is a BIG culture in the US of growing up with guns, and having them in your life from the very beginning.
So a family giving their 5 year old a gun doesen't bother me at all. Thats THEIR culture and how they are ALL raised. So I have no problem with that.
HOWEVER, we will all agree that this is 100% the parents fault on all counts. The 5 year old didnt do anything wrong. the parent, however, killed their daughter.
I know a great deal of people who own guns. Who have had them in their life since birth. All the gun owners *I* know are completly responsable. Every gun is considered loaded if its not locked up. Safety. Locks. Education. EVERY gun owner I know is the same frame of mind.
But THIS family...to leave a gun out has only brought this tragedy upon themselves. Its kind of like getting so compalicent you think "nothing can happen".
Except when you leave an accidently loaded gun in the corner.
So I have no problem with the 5 year old having a gun. I have every probblem with the morons who didnt follow propper safety. BASIC safety.

I'm sorry, I don't care what culture you are from, there are certain things that are wrong IMO. Children having drugs, cigarettes, guns, driving monster trucks, being sex objects is just all WRONG to me.

Re: 5-year-old boy shoots 2-year-old sister
seriously though. I think it's important to realize that we "suburban long island, NYers" aren't the only lifestyle out there. Not everyone lives in a home where they can spit and hit their neighbor. Not everyone drives 2 minutes to the grocery store to buy their food. Some people actually live off the fat of the land and farm and hunt and they pride themselves on sharing that tradition with their kids and passing it along. It's a tradition, but more importantly it is our HISTORY. Majority of people who would introduce their child to guns would only do so when they feel the child is ready and responsible enough to understand how serious they are. These parents were so so foolish and negligent ...but they are not an example of the masses.
