5 year old play date protocol
If a child is invited over someone's house, what are the rules in general?
My ds is 5 in a few weeks. Do I stay? How long is it generally? How do I go about finding out if it's expected I stay? The mom seems super nice, so I'm happy about that.
I'm so new to all of this

Re: 5 year old play date protocol
My kids are soon to be 6.
I stay unless I know the family very well. Right now there are only two families I'd feel comfortable leaving either DC with.
I've yet to do it.
If you are not comfortable leaving DC then suggest the following or just say, I hope you don't mind but I'd like to stay as we haven't done drop off play-dates yet.
If I don't know the family but my kids want a play date I suggest a mutually agreed upon public place and we all meet there.
In regards to length, I'd say about 2 hours or less.

I was the same when the boys were that age. To be honest.. I am still kind of like this. Robbie is almost 12 and has made some new friends in Middle School.. but I like to meet the kids and the parents before I agree to let him 'hang out' at another house.

5 year old play date protocol
See some things I'm lax about and others I'm not.
Like I wouldn't drop my kid off at ikea play area while I shop but I have no qualms about dropping him off for a couple hours at a classmate's home.
So most people stay, I assume? I don't know her well, just chit chat here or there.

Re: 5 year old play date protocol
I say in K - it has mostly been drop off or meeting in a public place (park, play place, bowling, etc). Since I have other kids and no babysitting for them - drop off really is the only option for the most part unless they want me and my 2 other kids there. I never know what people expect so if I am unsure I just ask what the parents prefer. If I am offering the playdate for the first time - I do offer both options. I totally understand if the parents want to stay.

5 year old play date protocol
My dd is almost 5 and she is just starting to make "best friends" lo in school. Ive gotten to know the other moms so sometimes I stay but other times I drop. If I didnt know the mom at all or it was my dd first playdate somewhere Id stay. It also depends on you child. If they seem good with u leaving and u feel comfortable with other mom, I think its perfectly fine to drop for an hour or two at most.

Re: 5 year old play date protocol
DD is 4.5. I always stay for the playdates. But we have become really close with a few moms and have seen them enough, where I would feel comfortable dropping DD off if they suggested it.
As for length - I think 2 or 2.5 hours is appropriate.

Re: 5 year old play date protocol
To make u guys laugh:
My friend had a playdate come over for what she thought would be 2 hrs.
Yeah--they came at 2 and didnt leave til 9 pm.
They (husband and wife) and the husband simply asked for the wi-fi password and said no more
The wife/mom replied that "its okay, we dont eat much" when my friend said her cousin was coming for dinner and she didnt make enough food
Playdate--beware
