Teachers Islandwide face layoffs in budget crunch - 59 teachers were given notices in Lindenhurst
This version taken from Newsday:
Fears that Long Island schools face widespread job losses next school year ratcheted up a notch Wednesday, with the announcement that layoff notices have been delivered to 59 teachers in Lindenhurst - one of many local districts planning to trim personnel.
Last night, Lindenhurst school board and teacher union officials pointed fingers at each other as being responsible for the crisis, at a budget meeting attended by about 400 people. The board president blamed the union for rejecting a wage freeze, an argument dismissed by his union counterpart.
The conflict underscored worries across the Island.
In Northport-East Northport, authorities Tuesday posted preliminary plans to lay off 40 teachers, 10 teaching assistants and five teaching aides. Middle Country has notified its union of plans to cut five teachers and as many as 23 teaching assistants. Patchogue-Medford has raised the possibility of 50 to 70 layoffs.
Statewide and on the Island, upcoming job losses for school workers are expected to be the worst in six years or more, with virtually all districts eliminating positions at least through retirement and most districts imposing layoffs as well, according to a survey by the State Council of School Superintendents. Projections are based largely on Gov. David A. Paterson's proposed $1.1 billion school-aid cut next year - a plan that lawmakers could largely reject.
In Lindenhurst, officials warn that they could be forced in a worst-case scenario to cut student services - for example, reducing full-day kindergarten classes to half-day sessions.
"It's terrible," said Richard Nathan, Lindenhurst superintendent, who added that he had personally helped hire all the teachers now slated to be laid off, some of whom have seven or eight years' experience. "I feel like the father who has to choose some of his children."
Lindenhurst officials confirm that many jobs would be saved if lawmakers restore Paterson's proposed cuts. But 22 positions are expected to be lost in any case due to falling enrollment. Local officials say potential cuts are aimed primarily at holding next year's tax increase to less than 4 percent.
During last night's discussion at Lindenhurst High School, board president Ed Murphy said leaders of the district's 580-member teacher union had rejected a proposed two-year pay freeze in return for saving jobs. Next year, teachers are due a 3.25 percent raise, plus step increases averaging 2.75 percent, the district said. Union president Rose Russo said her union leadership had offered short-term alternatives to a freeze. "This crisis cannot be blamed on teachers," she said.
To some extent, threatened layoffs are part of an annual ritual conducted by school districts in an effort to extract more aid from Albany and contract concessions from unions. Legislative leaders already have predicted that much of the governor's proposed reduction will be restored.
Still, teacher representatives are taking the threat seriously. New York State United Teachers, an umbrella union group, says responses to an ongoing survey indicate widespread layoff plans statewide, including more than a hundred jobs in Albany and hundreds more in Rochester.

Tough economic times for everyone. Why should teachers be exempt from lay-offs and pay freezes?

This is crazy! DH called me and told me that NYC teachers were facing 8,500 layoffs and now the number has increased to 15,000.
No job is "secure" in this economy

I am curious why these 59? Are they all just "extra" teachers? Then yes they should be laid off and probably never hired to begin with. Or are these teachers with classes?

All teachers have "classes"- maybe some of the fat comes from teachers who do things like staff development and aren't FT with kids- but to be honest, budgets have been getting cut since last year. What this will likely lead to, all over, are bigger class sizes. I teach in NYC and had 36-38 in "good" times so I wonder what will happen next year.

i was curious as well (live in lindenhurst) who was exactly cut. I also see most SD will be making kindergarten half days and other cuts to be made. I agree raising taxes is not a option, cuts need to be made with in the SD - just 59 jobs sounds like a lot to me but it all depends on the actual positions.

It's not that teachers should be exempt, but the number of kids isn't decreasing, so class size will be outrageous and the quality of education will suffer. They need to cut admin salaries, and consolidate admin jobs, maybe even districts.

Because the demand for education hasn't dropped and no one's school taxes have gone down.
Pay freezes I can see... There is a huge budget crunch, but I have a hard time with widespread layoffs, especially in schools where overcrowding is an issue. Despite the fact that I am as fiscally conservative as they come and a huge supporter of SMALL government, I think education and security (national and local) should be the absolute LAST areas / services we cut.
Yes, we'll still be "educating" the same number of students, but in larger classes with fewer teachers... That is really sad IMHO.

It mentions in the above article that it was proposed in order to save jobs but the unions said no. Take a pay freeze.

Maybe they should get rid of some of the administration too!!
I feel bad for my DS teacher. She is a fabulous teacher but she is a long term leave replacement and she is pregnant. I hope her job is safe because she is such a great teacher!!

I agree and I also think unions don't represent the majority of the members view. I teach at a private school and the school voted to take a pay freeze last year but we are getting our increase this year, unions never go this way though.

Exactly.
DH's district (in NJ) is going through it too but we won't know until May if he will have a position. He's in special ed. His position does not go away. But whether or not they choose to replace him with a cheaper option is another story since he's not tenured.
So for now we keep our fingers and toes crossed.
The ironic part is that this is a large part due to a drop or freeze in state aid to patch their budget. And yet I have to wonder if they're considered what this is going to do to unemployment.

I just want to clarify that I am not for wide spread layoffs (unless it is for unnecessary waste). But I am for pay freezes.

Re: Teachers Islandwide face layoffs in budget crunch - 59 teachers were given notices in Lindenhurst
Loss of teachers not only means larger class size (in the elementary schools it does), but at the secondary level it means cuts in programs. Electives will be cut (ie: music, art, business, technology classes). This means fewer opportunities for talented kids.
Everyone also needs to keep in mind, that teachers aren't the only things that cost money in a district. When taxes go up, it isn't just for teacher salaries but also for the increasing costs of running any building or home - increases in the cost of heat, electric, etc.

They would have to cut a lot before your DH is impacted-My Brother and SIL are teachers and both are tenured. I thought they were protected but I guess they are not.
However, it would take a lot to cut them that it doesn't happen to them or any of the teachers/teacher families here.

I work in a school that has had budget cuts. When teachers are let go class size jump, students don't get gym everyday or computer class.
Maybe they cut art, music etc...You know things that "don't matter"
Or maybe they cut a dean--safety issues.
ESL teacher, so now the ESL kids are not recieving the proper services.
It is not "fat" they are cutting (usually)
Perhaps they will cut a guidance counselor, so the child is misprogrammed, doesn;t graduate on time bc of it. Also, they don't get cousneling....so the kid that is depressed and wants to kill himself gets no help--no one to talk to.
Times are tough for everyone but when you watch SD's and the DOE pay "educational evaluators" 100K+ to come in and do a "quality review" while they are laying off teachers and hurting the students, it is very infuriating.

Re: Teachers Islandwide face layoffs in budget crunch - 59 teachers were given notices in Lindenhurst
I'm an independent school teacher, so these budget cuts don't affect me, but the thing that really bothers me about these cuts are that they are coming at a time when teachers are being looked to do more and more for their students with less and less money to provide the services and materials needed. I think it's really screwed up that in the near future, teachers will be working with tons more kids and expected to do a better job with less available to them. You know, it's times like this I'm glad I make less money but work outside the public schools. I feel for everyone that this affects!

Re: Teachers Islandwide face layoffs in budget crunch - 59 teachers were given notices in Lindenhurst
why should teachers be exempt from layoffs? the answer is simple....because less teachers = larger class sizes....it directly compromises the integirty of a district to make class sizes larger. Less teachers = less specials (gym, art, music, library) what a sin for the child who may never be an "A" student but who may excel in one of those areas...
