If you had 10 days to spend in Italy - where would you go??

Hi everyone! We are looking to go to Italy in the fall. We have 10 days to spend there. And that's all we have - LOL. I know I would love to go to Venice, Tuscany and the Amalfi Coast. Is that do-able? How many days in each city? Would you add any other places? All suggestions welcome (and needed)! Thank you for any help!!! Chat Icon

Edited to say this will be a trip for the two of us - no toddler Chat Icon

If I were you I would start in Venice and then either drive or train down to amalfi

We did a 2 week trip but it was slightly different

Flew into Rome
Drove to Tuscany
Drove to Florence
Drove to Verona
Drove to Venice

From Venice we flew to Sicily

Thanks Jen!! Did you enjoy all the places you visited? Anything you would take off the list or wish you added? Where did you spend the most time? Sorry for all the questions Chat Icon

Devon - where did you stay in Florence and Tuscany? And also - is it possible to do Venice and Tuscany and then make it down to Sargento/Amalfi?

I was going to suggest the same. Definitely go to Venice and then make the trip down to the Amalfi coast. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Sorrento! DH and I had a wonderful time there.

Rome is amazing too! When I was in Sicily we went to Catania and Taormina - both beautiful.

You really can't go wrong in Italy!

where is your number one priority?

you have 10 days. once you get to any one of these places, be it Tuscany or Amalfi, you will wish you had 100.

if this is one of those things you don't get to do often, pick the top 4 places you want to see and we can probably put our collective brains together for you!!!

Ok - my "wish" list would be (and again please pardon me not knowing how close any of these places are and if this is even possible):

Venice
Florence
Rome
Tuscan region (Siena maybe?)
Amalfi Coast

Anywhere else?
And we can can extend to more than 10 days. If you can suggest how many days in each area that would be AWESOME! Any details - where to stay - would be helpful! THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

you can do a few things here. you can fly in to venice is basically make your way south and east (or west, whatever, I suck at directionals)

Venice is a great town to just walk around and take it all in. you can get a real feel for it with just an overnight stay.

I've been twice. the first time was at a hotel steps from the Piazza San Marco. the second, which I was so in love with for the price, is a bit further from the Piazza but definitely walkable...it was gorgeous. BW Hotel Alba. I was a BIG fan LOL

External Image

Florence is also very walkable but if you want to do museums you'll need more time. I would say 2 nights, with a day trip to either Siena (my fav) or Pisa or another town. It's been many years since I've been to florence so I don't know many hotels.

Rome. Rome was not built in a day nor can it be seen in a day. you can do a very cursory walking tour over 2 days, I nt and then take the train down to Naples for the start of your amalfi trip.

the Amalfi is painfully beautiful. I went last year, 18 weeks preggo and only had about 5 days. it wasn't enough and we are going back...but it was just glorious.

for ease I will search for my review

yeah, too short is my only complaint (just 6 days *le sigh*)

the trip was fab but we REALLY needed more time. although, we would probably be bankrupt so I guess it was for the best

I am going to give a review on the travel board when I get some pics in but I'll tell you girls a little here

Naples is VERY bustling. it was my first time there and holy moly is it busy and filled with people. we did a nice walk through the old quarter, had "real" neapolitan pizza (brooklyn still wins ) and let the sounds of the city envelope us.

Pompeii was fabulous. it is staggering the size of the city and what they are unearthing there. definitely deserving of a few hours walking around.

Catellammare di STabia....lovely little town, GORGEOUS hotel. we stayed here after Naples instead of nearby Sorrento b/c the hotels were cheaper and it was very convenient to Pompeii. we walked the city, strolled by the meditteranean and had a DELICOUS dinner at a great restaurant. much less congested than Naples and a very nice jumping off point to the Amalfi.

Capri: holy heavenly. once you get out of the very crowed main Piazza it is just stunning. the homes, the fauna and flora...the magnificent views of the sea. we didn't have as much time there as we'd have liked, but we had a great lunch in the most beautiful setting. I'd love to go back and spend more time.

Positano: also quite lovely. pricey, but again, stunning views, great atmosphere, delicious food. I had a pair of custom sandals made for me. the fit my feet (for now anyway ) like a glove.

we left the Amalfi on Saturday and drove up to Milan, dropping my uncle and his wife off in Rome. we stopped and had lunch in the BEAUTIFUL hilltown of Orvieto, and continued along to have a delicious dinner in Bologna..before finally arriving in my beloved

Milano: there is nothing much to say except how much I want to live there. I just love being there so much. it's beautiful, cosmopolitan and very family friendly. we finally saw D'Vinci's the Last Supper on the wall of the Santa Maria delle Grazie (we've been to the city so many times and this was the FIRST I was able to get tickets!!) which was simply magnificent. we toured La Scala (tix were sold out...next time ) and just walked around soaking it in.

we also picked up a few cute little outfits for my Newton...and checked out the Chicco store for strollers and such.

overall, a great trip. EXTREMELY tiring b/c we did A LOT of walking and really tried to get so much in with such a small amount of time, but it was really a great time.

as far as the pregnancy goes, it was fine. I was more tired than usual, but toughed it out for the most part, I had A LOT more pee stops, but that is to be expected. it was great to see everyone out with their kids and grandkids enjoying them and teaching them to enjoy life.

we are already planning our next trip with Newton I can't wait.

all of you must GO GO GO!!!

I don't have all of the hotel info in my head but I'll get it for you if you choose the cities I went to.

enjoy your trip!!!!!!!

I've done a similar trip. 10 years ago I went for 10 days to Venice, Florence, Rome, and amalfi coast, as follows:

Venice: stayed 2 nights. I think 1 is now enough, but 2 is fine also.
Florence: stayed 2 nights - it was 1 but we changed it b/c i have family there. Florence is AMAZING.
Rome: 3 nights. Totally worth it. whatever you do, you want to see the vatican and sistine chapel - book a tour, it's the best way to get in.

From Rome we took the train to Naples, and then Sorrento. From Sorrento we took a bus up the Amalfi coast. There are a few towns you can stay in - Positano and Amalfi are def most popular; we stayed in Praiano which I loved. I LOVED our hotel. Keep in mind though it's on a hill so you will be either walking a lot uphill or taking the bus. It's a little easier if you stay in Positano or Amalfi (haven't stayed in the others, Ravello etc.) but more $$$ and touristy.

Amalfi coast is one of the most amazing things - I def want to go back with DH.

I also went as part of our HM to Italy - Venice, Florence Rome. I did this even though it was my 3rd time to all those places b/c I wanted DH to experience it.

It's really easy to train most places in Italy. When I go back, I want to go to Cinque Terre, Siena, and Portofino. And Sicily again, but that's tougher to do because my family would make me stay with them the whole time. Chat Icon

good luck!! Italy is AMAZING.

I would probably do 2 nights in Venice. It will give you time to take it slow, walk around and get lost in all the back streets. To me, that is the best part of Venice.

But, I would suggest Rome, Florence, Venice.

Even though I didn't like Florence, I know that I am in the minority and most people fall in love with it.

I have never been to Venice BUT I would love to go.

and Rome is just, indescribable.

Re: If you had 10 days to spend in Italy - where would you go??

We did a 10 day tour for our HM. If I were doing it again on my own (which is more our style, just didn't have time to plan since we were planning our wedding) we would do:

The most time in Rome
a few days in Venice
a few days in Florence
if you have time go to the Tuscany region. We really enjoyed Sienna.

I don't think she is planning on going there.

I just didn't edit my older cut/paste.

Milan isn't for tourists. I wouldn't recommend it to most people either.
