6 year old w/knee problem & poss Group A streptococcus infection
Not a parent, hope you don't mind me crashing, I am asking for my nephew & sister. I'd appreciate it if anyone with some insight could weigh in?
My 6 year old nephew suddenly can't walk and has severe knee pain. My sister took him to the doctor and they think that he has strep and a related infection in the fluid behind his kneecap.
Neither of us had ever heard of this but after doing some Googling, apparently it's happening to a lot of children.
I don't know what I'm looking for, I guess stories if you have experienced the same thing, what the treatment was and how it turned out? Maybe how long the symptoms lasted? Poor guy. They are going to stick a needle in his knee tomorrow to do a biopsy. This poor guy has severe asthma and winters are already filled with fear over respiratory illnesses, but this is a new one.
Thanks for reading.

Yes, I've heard of this. Someone that used to be on the boards, I believe, had a similar situation with her son last year, and a friend's son just got over the same thing. I think it's just like a virus that manifests in the joints. From what I know, rest and fluids are what make a big difference because it has to run its course. It's so scary, though. Hugs to you and your sister and nephew!

Re: 6 year old w/knee problem & poss Group A streptococcus infection
It sounds similar to something that I experienced in High School. I didn't have pain in my knees, but I didn't have any feeling either. I couldn't always control the direction that my legs would go in when I was walking either. They never found out exactly what it was, but they said it was most likely a virus that settled in the joints.
It went away on it's own in a few weeks.
I also had strep most of my senior year of H.S. but I don't remember if the knee thing was at the same time or not.

Re: 6 year old w/knee problem & poss Group A streptococcus infection
I appreciate your responses and FM's ladies.
Now that you mention it, I remember being "sick" when I was about 10ish and my leg muscles were crazy tight - like I had charlie horses for days. I'd have to walk around and 'stretch' them out before I could walk longer distances like to the kitchen. They never figured out what it was and the doctor called it growing pains.
It's interesting, these stories, I never knew it was possible.
