getting around NYC

I don't drive into NYC but I want to visit DH at work one day with DD. I was thinking of taking her on the train with the stroller with the carseat, so that we had the carseat to come back with, with DH (he drives). To anyone who has done this, how difficult is LIRR with a large stroller (the uppababy). Are the elevators easy to find and access from all trains to the main LIRR floor, and from that floor to the street? I'd have to walk about 30 blocks, but if the weather gets bad or too hot, what do people do? I can't really take a cab b/c there wouldn't be a car seat attached. What do people do in the city?

I ask this question all the time... and I'm told get a stroller you can carry with one hand, or put over your shoulder, so that you can hold the stroller, diaper bag and baby and walk up the stairs. Then take subway and busses everywhere.

When I take DS into the city I drive. That whole carry the stroller up stairs stuff is not for me and I think I'm pretty tough new yorker, just not a very strong one Chat Icon

How old is your DD?
I'd never take the train with an infant or toddler, especially if you're coming back with DH at rush hour.
Anytime I've gone into Manhattan with the kids I've driven.
You could take a cab the thirty blocks. Car seats are not required in taxis in NYC. You could put the stroller in the trunk.

Really? I'd like for people to please stop harassing me for thinking it might be okay Chat Icon

I was going to wait till DS was 2, and sneak him into the cab as a 4 year old or something. Chat Icon

Re: getting around NYC

I take subways everywhere, sometimes the bus. I have a lightweight stroller for when I am running errands and I just strap the stroller over my shoulder and go up and down the stairs.

If I am out for the whole day then I take my bigger stroller, but that is the city mini so it isn't that big and has an easy collapse and handle.

I also wear DS until we are in the city, then I put him in the stroller for the walk.

It seems much more intimidating then it actually is. It is like second nature to me.

Also, depending on where you DH is located there are a lot of subway stops that have elevators, so you can use those stops to get closer to your destination so you are not walking quite as far.

People always help you carry things if you need help as well.

We just took DS in on the train for the first time last week. He is 19 months old. I wheeled the stroller on at the railroad station where I live and off at Penn Station. We actually got off right at the elevator. Wasn't that bad. We got a cab outside and put the stroller in the trunk. DS sat on my lap. Could you borrow a smaller stroller or leave the carseat in your hubby's car that day?

This is what my friend who lives in Manhattan told me. I've never done it personally.

DD is 4 months. I was going to take the train during off hours into the city- like around noon so it should be relatively empty. I was going to use the uppababy and then just take the elevator up and walk I guess. We will then drive back with DH (we will have the car seat b/c i will use it with the adapter). What is the problem with taking the baby home during rush hour? She will probably just sleep the entire time in the car....(DH drives...no LIRR during rush hour)

Don't think I feel comfortable at her age to hold her in a cab... I do have a baby carrier but not sure it would come in handy for the trip.

I think it would be easier to walk than take a subway b/c the stroller is so big. My lightweight right now is the snap n go.... it wouldn't be good for the NYC streets. I plan on getting the Mclaren or City Mini in the future but I didn't think I needed it just yet....

I wanted to leave carseat in his car and take the actual uppababy seat but then I won't have a car seat in MY car to drive to the train station to get on the train! so...doesn't work. Although we have 2 bases, we only have one actual infant car seat!! Ugh so many things to think about! My option is really to just take stroller with carseat on it instead of the uppababy seat

I think the snap and go would be easier in the city. I used DS's metrolite when he was younger in the city. No problems and easier to get in and out of a cab. We drove in those times..

Re: getting around NYC

I would really try to avoid bringing the uppa baby. do you have a lighter stroller? you can always look for the stops with elevators for subways but i think you'll still hit some stairs at penn station. i have not taken the LIRR in a long time but I remember always running down stairs to catch the train. if you bring your large stroller, i'm sure some kind gentleman would help you up the stairs.

we live in the city and take cabs with no car seat all the time. i'd say leave the car seat at home but you need it to drive home.

Re: getting around NYC

I would give DH the car seat to put in his car the day you plan on going. Take a light weight stroller that folds easily so when you encounter stairs you can hold DC and still carry the stroller.

NYC taxis/liveries/buses do NOT require car seats.

I took both kids into the city (3 yo & 20 mo) had a single light weight stroller, folded it and carried it up the stairs to the subway and LIRR while holding the smallest and the oldest walked.

It was easier to take the subway bc DH works all the way down town.

Also sine your DH drives in to begin with. You driving in doesn't make much sense.

Re: getting around NYC

I would bring the snap and go instead. It will handle the walk just fine. It isn't like you are doing the walk everyday Kwim? I would also bring a baby carrier for when you are getting on and off the train, and if you need to take the subway. on the lirr you could leave the stroller by the doors and take a seat close by. Once you go through the tunnel stand up so you are one of the first to get out. Once I get upstairs I wait until I'm practically outside to see how is the weather. If too hot/cold/raining I keep DS on me and walk with diaper bag on stroller until I get to subway. I collapse the stroller drag it with one arm, throw diaper bag on my back, and hold the car seat with my other hand. I had snap and go too. Someone would usually help me. But not always. I would do this before I was preggo by myself a few times. I always thought what if the elevators don't work. So I never relied on them. But if they were working I would use it for sure. I would walk from Penn to 14th street sometimes where my dad worked. Or Rockefeller area other times but this was a much shorter walk. I never took a cab. Never knew you could take baby without car seat on cabs. Personally I wouldn't do it.
