7 month visit today-Not what I expected
Today we had Ethan's 7 month visit- he is exactly 7 months today. So the DR was checking him out and he was spending what seemed to be alot of time with the stethascope listening to his heart. He said it sounds like he has a heart murmer. Good thing my husband was there because after I heard that- I tuned everything else out. All I heard was Heart Murmer and cardiologist............and then i got teary-eyed and almost started to cry
Has anyone experienced this in their baby? I am so nervous/scared and dont know what to expect when we go to the other DR.
If you can say some prayers that all will be ok I would so appreciate it.
Thanks!!!

Someone posted about this within the last day or so also - check out that post.
But, relax, I l know it's scary. My DS had a heart murmur too and I panicked when my ped mentioned it. We went to the cardiologist when he was about 8 weeks old and he had a sonogram and ekg. We were told he had an "innocent" heart murmur that would likely go away on it's own as he got bigger. We went back to the cardiologost maybe 2 months ago and just as predicted, the murmur was gone. Like my ped said, if she thought it was something critically serious, she would have had my DS see the cardiologist immediately (which she has done before according to her). So, if you didn't need to go right away, take that as a good sign.

Re: 7 month visit today-Not what I expected
Well 27 years ago my sister had a heart murmur - actually she was born with it and it was so pronounced that at first the OB/GYN thought my mom was having twins! By the time she was one it corrected itself and she has never had any issues.
Good luck to you!

Re: 7 month visit today-Not what I expected
My DH had a heart murmur as a baby and it was gone by the time he was 1. I know it's easy for me to say don't worry about it...but it does seem like it's "common" and a lot of children outgrow them.

DS had one.. He's 16 now. They haven't heard it in years. I know how scared you are, though.

Re: 7 month visit today-Not what I expected
They told me DS might have one when he was a few months old. We went to a cardiologist. he said it was nothing to worry about. I believe he called it a "functional murmur". We went back a few months later and he didn't hear it anymore. This is supposedly pretty common. They said he was fine! Don't worry, it may pan out to be nothing. Best wishes!

Re: 7 month visit today-Not what I expected
Sorry to crash but I just wanted to say I was born with a heart murmur and am fine now and was fine my whole childhood; it was like I didnt even have it. I probably wouldnt have even known if my mom didnt tell me.
It went away a few years ago.

Re: 7 month visit today-Not what I expected
I do not have experience with a murmur but I do have experience with cardiac issues. DS was diagnosed with SVT (Supraventricular Tachycardia) at 3 weeks ago. We brought him to the dr for a weight check and his heart rate was 250bpm and they told me to rush him to the er. That was the only visit my DH didn't go to with me and I was a mess on the way to hospital. It is a scary thing to hear something could be wrong with your babies heart but I will tell you that Pediatric Cardiologist know there stuff and will always keep your DC health first. Clear your mind before going to the Dr and take in all that they say even write it down if you have to. Knowledge is the best thing you can have on the subject. Dont read off the internet until after the Dr because it will only freak you out more! Good luck and

Re: 7 month visit today-Not what I expected
I had one when I was younger, and my brother might have as well. I think its fairly common and not indicative of any sort of problem. It usually fixes itself as they get older.

Re: 7 month visit today-Not what I expected
My DD was born with a heart murmur. It wan't "innocent". She had VSD and PDA. I was a wreck b/c they found it when she was 2 days old. We had to go back when she was 4 weeks and of of the above mentioned defects had cleared up. She had to go back at 1 (still there) and 2 (everything cleared up, still had murmur but it's just due to how the blood flows through her heart. So now it's considered innocent.) I know it's very very scary, but I'm sure that if it was anything very serious, they would have picked it up before now. If you need the name of a good cardiologist, FM me

Re: 7 month visit today-Not what I expected
I actually have a heart murmur myself. I don't take any medication at all (not even when I go to the dentist) and its really not a big deal. Just not something you want to hear from a doctor about your 7 month old, you'd like the heart to be kept completely out of the conversation!
But also, when DS was about 4 months old the doctor said the same thing to me. Took him to a pediatric cardiologist and they said it wasn't really a murmur like you'd think, that its something he'll grow out of and not to even mention it at all to anyone, that's how not serious it was. I hope you get the same diagnosis! Let me know if you need a referral to a nice pediatric cardiologist!

Re: 7 month visit today-Not what I expected
we got the same exact news at 4m, and I think my reaction was identical to yours. I went online and researched it to death and felt a little better that most of these such murmurs are innocent and some even fade over time.
We went to cardiologist, I was so nervous, but it was reallyno big deal. They did a sonogram on his heart, while I let him drink a bottle of chamomile tea (our ped recommended it for gas, but we find it works to help calm DS when he's irritated and save it for doctor appointments.)
Anyway, the cardiologist diagnosed it as an innocent murmur and said we just need to keep an eye on it. At DS 6m appointment, our ped didn't hear it anymore, and said he probably grew out if it.

ditto to everything except we were told to go back for another checkup after he turned a year old.

happened to us too. at one month check up doc sent us same day to cardiologist. turned out to be an innocent murmur and cardiologist told us to go back in a year. meanwhile at DS's 2 month visit the doc said the murmur is already gone.
